OK, so the motor is an out-runner with a 3mm shaft sticking out of the can? On most out-runners its not hard to replace the shaft with a longer one.

Yep the weapon will be run by an 1806 outrunner.

I guess a pic of the bottom of the robot might help.

On the topic of getting a longer shaft and a thicker blade... I'm still kinda confused about laser cutting Ti, or any metal for that matter... All the shops I ran into said I can't have hole/corner diameter smaller than the thickness of the plate. (if that's true I can't have a thicker blade due to the M2 holes) However I do notice that there are some laser cut parts with right angles. (if this is true then I could have a thicker blade)

I haven't heard of the explanation for the laser-cut hole diameter VS depth but most places say they can't do it. I got some small antweight Ti blades cut with waterjetting, which generally doesn't have that problem. The other option is to just get the laser to penetrate through the centre of the hole as a guide and then drill it out.

Thx for the info. Waterjetting sounds interesting... Which shop did you do those blades with?

Update:

After a few fights in my brain's Virtual Combat Arenaâ„¢ I decided to make a few revisions of the Claymore chassis. I sort of want a front end that can fight both a horizontal spinner and a stand-off device.

Bad news:

Claymore is very unlikely to make it to the March event... None of the watercutting shops have responded to me, and an order from China would take too long. But eventually it will be up and running.

EDIT: Probably can't use 100% infill on these, SW is showing me an increase in weight of like 10+ grams.

For your ant, I would aim to try and make the front either have some sort of added protection( think polycarbonate etc.) or have a replaceable printed section, to prevent damage to just the front writing off the entire thing. This is important if you want to get it printed from some of the more expensive materials like Markforged Onyx.

I'm currently planning on using Aluminum tapes if I have spare weight (an idea taken from Don't Need Road). Yeah I think a replaceable front end is the way to go, but that will be after I can print those fancy materials.

Question:

So as I added the front wedge to Claymore, the robot is now overweight in SW so I will have to use less than 100% infill. What do you guys think is better? Thick walls low infill or thin walls high infill?

EDIT: Also, if I set the wall thickness to 2mm, but some parts of my print are only 1mm thick, will that create problems?

Recently a few new ideas popped up in my head and I'm not too sure about them (plus I probably spammed too much in the technical chat channel). So I decided to sum everything up into this post. I would love to hear what you guys think of these.

1.Simplified brushless drivetrain

This idea came up when I first saw Neon's drive where Ellis had an outrunner, a timing belt (both for transmission and reduction), and a wheel. I wonder if it sounds viable to skip the wheel and use a thick timing belt covered with rubber as tire? Tensioning will be done by the inverted drive wheel traveling in a slot.

2.Internal friction wheel driven hollow drum

Pretty self-explanatory name I guess, just put brushless outrunners with friction wheels into a hollow drum (imagine Touro's drum with Equinox-ish mounting).

Update:

School gets busier and busier each sem (who would have guessed lol).

Current plan going forward is to find opportunities to compete with Contraption, use the experience gained to improve other designs. Pick the design I would like to go with for my next featherweight (for now there are two designs pretty much ready to go, and two design I already have some early ideas for), maybe apply for an FMB event and get the potential 2000RMB funding to build my next machine, whatever that might be.

Update on Abomination:

Learned a lot from the current version of Contraption. Redesigned weapon motor mounts so that they might suck less. The pulleys new have flanges and the tensioning device is on the top side for easy access.
