Best ever motor/gearbox?
Hi all, I just had to share this advance info I received from the Whyachi guys. They are about to launch two new planetary gearboxes and motors:
Best news: starting from around $90 US! I don't know anything about the weight or speed, but the dimensions of the smaller motor are similar to an RS-550, so it should be comparable in performance to a drill motor. How freaking good do they look?! _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

$90US is enought to buy several million XU1 drills though, which would last almost as long! _________________ The Engine Whisperer

Its more like 6.28 XU1 drills, which I can destroy pretty quickly I seem to average almost 2 per event. On this design there is no annoying LH screw to come out and the mounting points are already made and very solid. let's face it, you usually get what you pay for, and if you only buy something on the cheapest price, you will probably get the worst performance. These units will appeal to anyone who wanted a Dewalt setup but couldn't quite afford them, not beginners on a shoestring budget. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Looks good to me.. a little pricey, but not unreasonably so if they prove to be reliable and powerful, and the whyachi's aren't known for producing sub standard equipment .
Do you know where or when can we find more information on these drives please ?
When Andrew (Vertex) gets his modifications done, hopefully the price for them will work out to fill the gap between cheap-as stock drill motors, and the whyachi option, which gives a nice range of choices. _________________ Great minds discuss ideas. Terry said these would appear on the Whyachi site in a week or two, so there should be full drawings and specs then. They seem to be 12V motors and the smaller one runs about 650 RPM. No word on over-volting or if they have matching wheels (Jake could make a great wheel for these!). I'm guessing the motors are lower revving ones and the gearbox is single stage. another nice thing here is that they should be OK with an IBC
Considering the cost of all the other commercial equivalents, these are a bargain and I'm confident enough to drop a set into Jolt ASAP. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

So, this is more an XU1 replacement, rather than an 18V Dewalt replacement ? _________________ Jeff Ferrara

looks like a normal 550 with some hefty running gear so id say it looks to be a gearbox replacement for the normal drills.

Correct, I would say these have less torque than the deWalts by quite a bit, but then they are $80 US cheaper and have no plastic bits. I wouldn't be too surprised if people start adding other motors to this kit - a mini EV or a dewalt would look fine on the back of the gearbox. I believe that these will also drop in to any space that a drill motor would have fitted a they are just a fraction bigger all 'round than a drill motor.
I don't think its a normal 550 motor - the brush area is too long and there are 4 vent holes. Of course, if it IS a 550 clone, then all those after-market RC racer motors come into consideration. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Looks quite nice for those with some $$$ who wish to upgrade a bit from there XU1 combos. Is the pricing for the gearbox alone, or with motor? _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

I gather it's $90 for the combo. I am guessing that is for the smaller TWA15 and the TWA18 would be a bit more - I just heard "around $90" and that's all. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

They look ok and easy to mount but you would need some sort of wheel hub mount as well to use them with those keyed and D shaped shafts

Whyachi is making wheels for these too. There will be a 60mm diameter by 25mm wheel for the TWR15 (I think this combo is intended for Hobbyweights) and a 76mm diameter by 38mm wide wheel for the TWR18.
They will probably looks something like this:
I have a set like this on Subliminal and they are extremely tough and well made. It sounds like all these parts will be available after Terry gets back from the New Orleans event. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

One is a 550 size motor, the other is 700 size. _________________ Get Some!!!
