How To Solder

While attending events and looking at peoples electronics in their robots and reading the "How to" threads in this forum it seems to me that some builders are having dificulties with soldering their electronics together. I do understand that soldering is not something that everone does for a living (I do) so I thought of putting up a guide for beginers.
Being the lazy person that I am I imediatly googled up some guides and here are a couple of good ones:

http://tools.aubuchonhardware.com/do_it_yourself_projects/how_to_solder.asp A good guide for soldering heavy gauage wire.

http://www.geocities.com/j4_student/soldering.htm Lots of good stuff but no pics.

http://www.kpsec.freeuk.com/solder.htm Good and has pics. Change the last line of the first aid instructions to say "For burns larger than a 20c piece see a doctor". Not for burns larger than your hand!!

http://www.smspower.org/smsreader/solder.html The best examples of bad joints I could find.

The above web sites are what I thought of as the best but search yourselfs and prove me wrong. I myself learnt from a book from Dick Smiths and a couple of his kits, then I did a soldering course at uni and recently another at work (PS: I work for micro electronics company where I assemble various pieces of medical equipment. Boring stuff.). The best way to learn is to practise and make mistakes.
I would put up my own guide as a html but it will take a fair bit of time to get pictures and stuff organised so I won't do it unless enough people are interested.

I would really like to see you make that tutorial, because every bot bolder will experince complex soldering somewhere when building there robots. weather making up there own speed controllers and soldering touchy components to soldering simple caps across motors.

I deffinately need to get back into practising with soldering, i would have if my soldering iron hadn't gone swimming in Hydraulic fluid at Andrews Evil or Very Mad

lol i only learned how to actually tin the wire about 2 months ago, i guess thats why most of my soldering joints suck heavily hehe.

i also had a go at soldering nicads, not sure if i did it right, but i just tinned each tag and then heated the two cells up and they sort of 'snapped' together, strong joint too.
