They generally use spark gaps or bigass SCR's to trigger too

Yes, I thought so. Starting the current flowing is one thing.. stopping it again, especially when it has a lot of inductance (motor coils) trying to keep it moving is another.

Where are the Medonian's when you need them ? (I wonder how many will get that quote ? Wink )

Thats the crew. The Medonians from the Lensman series.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lensman

quote - "the power systems capacities are clearly based on refinements of total conversation technology; early in Gray Lensman, the Dauntless is described as using "30 pounds per hour" of power while inertialess and running at full thrust.

Using E = mc2, this works out to 400 trillion watts of power (or, in terms of its destructive potential, 100 kilotons TNT equivalent per second ). With the advent of Medonian electrical systems following the penetration into the Second Galaxy, by the end of the series useable power on-board had been increased by another factor of a 1000.

1.21 GigaWatts ? Pah, lightweight.. Smile

i think i once worked out a total conversion system to power the earth would use 2x 44 gallon drums of water per day.

Here is a copy of an e mail i recieved through the OMC group.

It contains heaps of links and information about brushles motors and bateries and looking after them I thought it beter to just post the whole e mail with links rather than to disect it .Mabee some one can add the links to the wiki in the technical thread.

You might want to remove peoples personal addresses from that email, unless you want to curse them with 20 years of spam and annoyance.

Normally I wouldn't overvolt a motor to any more than 150%, so 9,6V on a 6V motor, 18V on a 12V motor and so on. But I have seen a lot of robots on 200% and work too. If the motor looks up to the task, give it a go i'd say.

Could be a Suprise... I remember thinking the same about the 100watt scooter motors when I first saw them. Just saw the weight, and the power they produced and thought they'd be gutless, and I was happily proved wrong Laughing

They might be a more reliable motor then anything, being only USD$80, they would still have the great Magmotor construction. You might not have the HP of a Dewalt or similar, but you have a lot more thermal mass and the motor is probably going to last a lot longer...

Look at Reboot, has been running the same Scooter motors for years now..., how many of us can say the same with our drill motors or Mini Ev's Confused
