Found a intersting power supply, 750w petrol generator from bunnings for $98. Says it can do 240v or 14v, realy don't know if it can put out the full 750 watt on 14v but intersting any way.

THought I would revive this post.

Am looking at power supplies atm - about time.

My question is related to swithmode verses fixed linear power supplies.
Recently was told that to charge SLAs straight from a power supply a Linear would be better.
Its mainly for the Triton and considering 13.8 volts but cant say I fully understand the difference with Linear verses switchmode.

Anyone care to explain - gather for the triton it wouldnt make much diff but its more for consideration so SLAs can be charged straight from the power supply

As usual - "It depends.."

What you are looking for is voltage stability under load and ripple specs on the supply.

Small Linears usually have less ripple than small Switchmodes do, all other things being equal, so a Linear would be better for charging SLA's most of the time. (They dont like Ripple)

The Triton doesnt care about a little bit of ripple on the input, its more interested in the amps, and its cheaper to get a high amp switchmode than a high amp linear since switchmodes dont need the big iron transformer and filtering caps of a linear.

A *good* switchmode ($$) will have very small ripple under load, and will be fine for charging SLA's directly as well, but make sure you 'scope it especially if you are running it close its rated output current.

$ for Watt, you cant beat the modded-PC power supply. Add a small SLA to smooth things out and supply the current peaks and you should be right to run at least 2 or 3 tritons.
