Well since u r reasonable new to this i would suggest building all electric powered robots. DOnt use gases or liquid mechanisms until u have more experience.

U can use electric window winder mechanisms for electric lifters.

Anywho. Jeff Johnson (giantrobo) has built one of teh best featherweights flippers round using nothing more than coke bottles (sith some fibreglass for strengh on them). the handle assemble from a air brush can and some modified bike pumps.

Phil has also used proper numatics with his robot marauder which is surprisingly powerful.

I would start with a more simple mechanism as i have had much experience in building things and mistakes and i still dont want to make one purely on the inexperience fastor.

theres infinite amounts of places to get pneumatic stuff from around here,

ive seen a few people with 1000psi liquid co2 tanks around and proper pnuematic cylinders. just have to know where to look.

SMC did our bmx gates a while back and theyve taken a shyteload of abuse.

for the humble begineer a pair of coke bottles and two bike pumps will give you something to roll the other guy over, but dont go expecting to launch them from one side to ther other on your first try. and stick to low pressure <90psi if you HAVE to go gas.

Angus, IMO pneumatics are great. You can attack your opponent and make it spectacular without destroying them. I like the idea of being able to battle all day. Spinners are spectacular also, but the fun is short lived. Self-right ability is another advantage with flippers.

The disadvantage to flippers is that you have limited gas and you chew up some of your weight allowance. That said, Marauder is 9 kg.

Flippers are very easy to do. A bar with a ram in the middle and a hinge at one end, throw in a tank and a valve and you have a complete weapon.

Marauder has a 32 mm diameter 85 mm stroke ram mounted vertically. The ram is at right angles to the fulcrum (hinge). The tank is an old fire extinguisher (free) that I pump up with 180 psi. The 3/2 valve ($20) and ram ($20) came from a truck wrecker. I run tube from a compressor airline between the items.

Please ask any questions you might have. Would you like anything said above clarified or expanded? Specific questions are the easiest to answer.

An interesting point to consider is that there is actually a lot more energy per weight in a set of quality nicads than you can get into a gas cylinder.

However, since they are slow-discharge, batteries require some form of intermediate "electrical buffer" (much like pneumatics benefit from a buffer tank) to store the energy as it comes from the batteries before hitting the other robot with it.

This is why the Whyachi's keep coming up with novel systems like battery wound springs, and flywheel powered flippers.

Spinners, Thwacks and Rammers are all different forms of kinetic-energy storage systems

The main advantgae of pneumatics is thats is easier to get the energy out of storage faster than you can with batteries. Its quite dangerous though (as is anything that can dump a lot of power out in a hurry), so if you're playing with anything over 100psi, make sure you have someone with experience to advise you.

well lachlan and im sure a few others can inform you of the danger of having a bike pump ram blast into the side of their garage Confused

You could always buy Marshal's bot, MITE-E-ER. It has a lot of gear for the price.

I don't think I will be using pneumatics for my first bot, I'll stick with electronics for now. Very Happy (but thanks for all the advice! I will definitly use it in the future, I've got a design for a wicked new sort of weapon Twisted Evil )

So 145psi is off the shelf stuff is it?

Eg"easy to get and not too expensive used in most small machiens like dockers"yes iv been eyeing off the rams in the machien at work lol" and things like that?

So 145psi all i kneed is a ram pipe fire extinguisher bottle soliniod valve and compressor that will cut of at 150psi?.

I just dont know if i would be able to make a good flipper with 145psi?
Is there an advantage to using two rams at 145psi?

This is for a light weight!

Another thing what are the dangers of getting grit dust or anything on the air tank or sysem? how do i avoid this?

Would jasons setup flip a light weight bot if it had a ram half the length and maybe a buffer tank for a quicker flip?

What psi is jasons setup?

Yes. 16 bar or 232 psi is also a standard.

Would this flip another 27kg?
And would it take 145psi or more?
