Ac motors

Thought I would start this thread on the option of using AC motors in a dc system. Dont know what the implications are so can anyone help clarify this. Have seen some AC motors but they dont have magnets, they have a coil on the outside as well. Will they runbackwards. Is it a waste of time or not. If an ac motor at 240 volts is only 125 watts does that mean that at 24 volts its 12.5 watts/less or does DC power change that. Are there any advantage or is it a bad idea?

Hi Machine head .. about useing 240 volt a/c motors on dc most ac motors are induction motors and wont work on d/c with the exception of brush type series and shunt wound motors (comonly found in vacume cleaners . electric drills grinders jig saw s ect that require high starting and working torque )these will operate on d/c but at 12 or 24 volts will not produce very much power iff they even rotate at all .These motors are wound with much thinner wire and a lot more turns so they use less amps at higher volts . Iff you rewound themwith thicker wire and les turns to suit the lower voltages most would probaly work as low voltage d/c motors.... so to answer the question . with out extensive modification they are prety useless for low vltage d/c purposes.
