apart from George has anyone attempeted to build a tracked bot?

as we come closer and closer to having an outdoor event I ws wondering if this was good way to go. Even if it ment buying tracks like the ones on robot market place.

I've tried building tracks. I read on a R/C tank website about friction driven tracks. My first attempt didn't work because the friction wheels slipped inside the tracks and I decided it was too heavy to keep bothering with it.

But one day I wouldn't mind casting my own track links just for the fun of it.

tracks still need road wheels, so unless you are actually off road, theres not much point.
They also are very inviting targets for anything with a weapon.

All valid points. After having built a couple of systems I have come to the belief that they do give you better traction but the reality of all the componets working in harmony seems too much for combat.

The middle ground is where I would be going and that is simply to have a 4 wheeled robot with a track joining each pair of wheels. It allows contigencies if you lose a track and it minimises weight and components.

Still needs some work to get happening but.
I dont bother with the debate of if tracks give you better traction anymore, to me its academic.

We are on track to have the 2 PC bots there this time so we can have a Tug of war as a filler, Pod could take on Overdrive or Little Mack, Wonder if APC still wont to do the article on them?

Hah, my first thought when I read site that said "What happens when you hand a 'bot a Tazer" was "and what happens when you tazer the 'bot" . Wink

50Kv would do wonders for a metal-shelled radio controlled robot - you would have to make sure the frame and electronics were very well insulated from each other or a security robot would be killable with a quick tap from any stun gun.

Live by the sword and you'll die by the same Smile
