I'm going to try my hand at a *cough* reasonable reliability vertical spinner. Nothing insane about this design, I just want it to work more often than not.

Drive - 2 x Oatley 100W scooter motor kit
Weapon - 2 x Vertical discs with slip clutches on a live axle
Weapon motor - Oatley 200W scooter motor
Speed control - a BOXED IBC

Inspired by some of Brett's advice, although it may not work as planned, it shouldn't break too often. Nothing will be overvolted if it can be helped.

2x disks is probably a waste
just put one on and make it more stable

Best option would be to put something like a 60mm pipe as a dead axle to tie together the two halves of your frame.

Very Happy I shall know it as hardon...
60mm seems massive jake... you could always get case hardened rod and drill/tap the center to screw it to your frame... worked ok for rapture and would be even more suited to a vertical spinner.
You could use your ev too Twisted Evil

The problem with vertical spinners is the disk basically cuts the robot in half.
so like orbit you wind up with a weak spot in the middle under the disk.
by putting something with a large diameter as the shaft your going to get allot of stiffness and as a bonus your disk/etc will stand up to a hit from a horizontal spinner better.

My rough plan at the moment is two thick plates for each side with some cross bracing on the back half. But your right in the fact that I should probably buff the size of the shaft.

Its not a very efficient robot combat design, but its different and I like it for the reason... cool.

looks pretty heavy

If you make them contra-rotate and put them togther then you negate the gyro effects and get a pretty nasty looking wep ;->

Wouldn't one of the contra-rotating disks tend to flip the bot rather than the opponent? I quite like the design, except I would extend the sides to make small wedges to help get under other bots.

Making asymmetrical disks like Plan B had would also increase the effectiveness. Where is the weapon drive motor?

Drop the disks and put a massive F off drum in. Shocked
You could probably make it even more compact then... stick the weapon motor inside the drum etc. Razz

Why armoring the disks ment to defeat armor?

I was thinking about the contra-rotation except that I currently only have one weapon motor (and am trying to avoid too many pulleys.) If I did that and left them where they were then I would have a correctly orientated disc either way up. And yes the weapon motor is hidden in that photo, there is a small window at the back where the belt will go through to the motor mounted between the wheels.

Still tossing around ideas, if I use a belt roller I can squash the whole thing down and roller the belt around one of the drive motors. Then I will need less height, which results in a smaller disc and also a shorted frame all up.

Then if I change the discs to a drum of the same size (200mm diameter), and put a wedge at the back, it makes the bot look like a taller version of Reboot. Razz Not such a bad idea to take ideas from a winner Wink

I haven't seen, nor can I find and pics of plan B (not that I've looked too hard.)

I've had this idea of the wheels sticking out the back for a while to avoid the embarrassment of the losing because the bot has been perched against the wall. I guess it doesn't happen too often, maybe I could make a bolt on wedge and take it off for lifter fights.

The armour that guards the disc is designed to protect the weapon shaft from bending dues to side impacts on the disc. I'm not sure if it helps in any way since the side bending in would also cause the shaft to bend. I must look at ways of drilling bigger holes so that I can have a thicker shaft.

Also need to remember that if you hit someone with one of the discs the energy from the other will be transmitted via the axle. If your running two discs you will need some really strong hubs to handle the torque.

I'm still looking into torque limiters to see if I can isolate them
