Re-Winding Motors

I've looked through the forum, and a few people have rewound motors, but I haven't found anything specific so:
1. Is the XU1 motors able to, or easy to, be rewound? and what is the stock winding?
2. What guage is the winding-wire in the XU1s, and are they the same in most cordless drills?
3. Where are good places to get wire. I found out that Dick Smith sells some re winding wire here (about) .

I was wanting to make some 75, maybe 90 wind motors because I got a box, and plan on just pushing other bots around. So more torque and less speed required, plus I can claim that I have actually modded something Smile

not sure on any of those but the only one ive got that jake rewound for kicks was way unbalanced. not sure how youd go about balancing them without a lathe or special jig.

thats alot of turns as well id imagine you would need quite thin wire.

Even though our dollar has tanked against the US, it would still be fairly cheap to buy some 65 turn lathe motors from Tower Hobby - http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXLYV4&P=7 . If you run them at a reasonable voltage, they should be perfect for your project.

Dad has rewound both of our 18 volt motors.
the first one was a little unbalanced. The second is balanced better than it comes out of the factory, its silent. Dad is/was going to rewind the first one again to get it better.

a lathe wont help you do the balancing, you need either allot of patience and skill or some decent equipment to do a balancing.

don't know if i'd be doing it with new motors though, easier just to get the right ones.

Kinda along the lines of re winding.

Advance timing a motor dose it increase or decrease torque/hp?

It increases power and speed, but only in one direction. that makes it handy for a weapon motor but a real problem for drive motors.
