lol... I probably would have chosen something sturdier Very Happy

Dont forget every impact you dish out, you take aswell..
I've used a 6mm aluminium plate... It's not the strongest, but its light and with the braces all around to support the ring it'll strengthen it even more.

Maybe you should look at something similar?

What does your shell weigh?

What’s this base plate thing anyhow? Badger just has a piece of 3mm pollycarb to keep his works from falling out. Smile

The rim is still 7.5kg but I plan to chop another kilo or so off it. I'm thinking I may pop rivet something like ali U channel to the base plate. It shouldn't be taking any direct hits anyway. The only reason that it got hit was because I got desperate in trimming that morning and the base plate was sticking out the bottom.

Polycarb you say... what a great idea

pop rivets + combat bot = FAIL! No ifs or buts, they suck from start to finish. That might sound harsh and opinionated, but it the truth...

Yay for necromancy!

Anywho, the baseplate was rather securely fixed to the shaft via 2 1/4" bolts into an ali block, which was a tight fit on the shaft. A decent sized notch was also cut into the shaft where another bolt was screwed in. I'm sure Angus still has the cad somewhere of the blocks he sent me Razz

My problem was there was no stiffening of the baseplate Sad

lol I did but they were simply 40mm x 40mm x 20mm or so blocks, and that was BEFORE you hacked the crap outta them Laughing
Generaly speaking if you can support the weapon shaft from two furthest possible points (ie one at the base and the other right at the top) That will be your strongest option.
