Really there is a few options.

-Learn how to do the image processing myself. I have already had a look at this and won't be too hard particularly since most of the existing work is opensource.

-Become an active developer on the SSL-vision and see if I can get firewire DV cameras working or the v4l plugin going.

-Wait and hope they will get v4l going sometime soon.

-Implemented tracking using IR beacons on wiimote.

As far as costs go webcam is cheapest. Then wiimote, DV cam and finally firewire camera. I don't really think anyone else is going to actually build any robots until I can show that it works, so in that sense I am tempted to just hack up a wiimote implementation which is probably the easiest if not the most flexible.

simple image processing shouldn't be too hard.
put an IR beacon on the bots, use a webcam with IR filter removed and another filter that blocks everything except IR (exposed film works well I hear) and you will get blobs of IR that you can feed into stuff.

take a look at the multi touch stuff, it works in a similar fashion, and should give you info on where stuff is pretty easily.
