Time to revive this with some insect bots for the NSW event,

Beetle idea: an overhead grabber similar in design to born2fail with a few key fixes, Weapon motor will be interchangable between 1000rpm Virtual village or a 350rpm motor almost identical from some american ebay page.
4s pack
2x 1000rpm VV motors,
19mm Cutting board armor.
Hope to build a prototype of the weapon in the next few days to see how bad it is.

ant.
Polycarb and 'carbon fiber' armor
gearmotors 50:1
2S lipo.
servo 'lifter'

Know a guy who is using Kevlar and carbon fiber to make HPV so looking at exploring an idea to make a base and armor all in 1 job

No CADs yet. Still in the early design phase,

ESC's will be plush30's avr version modified with steves BESC code although I may customise its response a little. The plush30's proved reliable with my other robot at 3s when I stalled the motors little heat was generated.

Thinking about it I may drop to 3s to start with on the beetle

4S is fine with the Plush30's. I tested it with scooter motors a few weeks back and they handled 5-20mins of driving without issue.

Good to see your getting back into building bots again Smile My facebook harrassment paid off!

Judging from that the weak link in the system is the threaded rod.

Possible to change it for something harder (stainless?)

Or perhaps swap the location of the pivot point and the rod drive. That way the rod would be under tension not compression and couldn't bend out of the way.

You are right the single biggest weakness in the weapon was the rod. At the last robowars it rearly bent far worse then in that test video. It was also only held in by a drill clutch.
Thanks for the ideas Lemming, When I start redesigning this bot again ill do some tests with it.
Driving was a complete other problem. Too much weld the night before so I could not drive foward

The plan is when fixing that to get a thicker threaded rod such that i can drill/tap it to trhead onto the output shaft of the dewalt. A stainless steel pin would then be put though both to hold it together.
That or completely redesign the weapon system.

The complete redesign ive been thinking about for around a year is a bigger base. The motor and lead screw mounted flat parallel to the base then mechanical linkages to the arm and chain drive between the lead screw and motor, While this is less efficient it should protect the lead screw a lot more but would take up a lot more frame space introducing weight for armor as well as weight for the linkages and my right angle dewalt that needs a new motor after catching fire would need to be replaced by a high power compact system, AT the time I was thinking a magnum 770.

@ aaron, Your facebook harassment didn't fully pay off, Not sure if I will use plastic like you keep telling me.

Got distracted yesterday with family stuff. Hopefully today I can build some test stuff

Very quick CAD to get some of my ideas down. Inside the large square attached to the lead screw is a 1000RPM VV motor, Omniwheels there will be replaced by foam wheels at this stage. This section is steel.
Armour 12mm cutting board. If weight permits 19mm, Front wedge cutting board.
Base plate at this stage polycarbonate however I think it may need an upgrade to Aluminium.
upright mounts 19mm cutting board.
Threaded rod 8mm may upgrade to 10mm diameter directly mounted onto the output shaft of the motor. Grub screw holding this in place.'
Electronics not mounted however should fit in the gaps.
No estimate on weight ATM but looks heavy.

Another design i am working on is based off the omniframe I have http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a303/seanet1310/IMGP5574.jpg

EDIT: Inventor says 1.25kg, Time for some weight reduction in the CAD. Current jaw is 3mm, Maybe thin that down, weight holes, and the weapon motor housing pocketed Ali are current ideas for weight reduction.

try design it with the drill motors in between the weapon drill and the claw pivot, could dump a chunk of the frame off the back then.
once you finalize the design try to put in some angles round the edges, give you some better protection from spinners.
also a thin layer of stainless would go a long way over that plastic armour.
good luck with it! Smile

Having the screw pushing up on the rocker arm is going to be hard as it will always try and bend out to the side.

Pulling it down is a much better option as the only failure mode then would be for the screw to snap, which is highly unlikely.

B2F will be making an appearance at QLD nationals,

Unfortunately this will mean a less useful weapon, but a weapon none the less.

Biggest issue at the moment, Two of my A123 cells have died sense I last played with the pack 4 months back, So far the only packs I can find that may suit are
http://www.modelflight.com.au/products/Thunder_Power_G6_Pro_Power_LiPo_2250MAH_3S_11_1V_65C-9534-38.html by 2.

Length for lipo is the issue, with modification I can get about 100mm size so even this one will be a tight fit

Due to the use of an old frame Space is very limited as is the protection I could offer the lipo's with a 3mm steel barrier and about 3mm air gap to the outer armor, Last event bender put a slight dent in the barrier.

Will need to order lipo's soon OR a couple new A123.

Other then that replacing a side panel, new wedge to avoid the ground clearance issue of previous and corner reinforcement are the major issues.

For people that do not remember B2F was previously known as Born to Fail. My first steel robot and competed at the last robowars nationals at sidetracked.
Here is the last test vehicle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLx0vW-djcM

Unfortunately I did too good a job of reducing size and maximizing space with CAD so limited changes now.

Stats.
XXL for drive motors.
18V DSE drive (I have 5 motors)
Victor 885 weapon ESC
18v right angle dewalt (Caught fire last time) weapon motor.

So it turns out I have not made a post in almost two years in the build thread so had to dig this out of the second page, how slack.

So Plastic Fantastic went better then could be expected given the short time frame of build.
Was a 13.x kg robot with barbie doll hood ornament and pink skirt against non spinners. About 2kg heaver then my previous plastic robots and the heaviest robot I have built. Also first robot without mixing, not as hard to drive as I thought it would be.
Power 5S A123
ESC: TZ85a's.
Armour: 50-80mm cutting board
Weapon, plastic to fill a spinners blade with.

Fight 1: Vendetta, a decent little fight against my arch nemesis who I draw every nationals. A lot of pushing but thankfully due to my large weight at the front he could not get under my bot and I managed to take out the win.

Fight 2: Demon, Glen could do little to my robot but create a lot of fine plastic dust an managed to remove three pieces of side armour but all sides had panels left on. Upon inspection all three ripped off at the short screw point and did not break with only 1 screw damaged so longer screws or some threaded bolts in the future may be the go. It was a fun fight and in the end the judges ruled against me. Understandable given I left 3kg of plastic in the arena and after attaching the armour I was 100grams lighter then when I entered. Would have been a hard fight to judge. Glen somehow did not kill barbie. After the fight I checked. Demon got within 200mm of my critical components.

Fight 3. Cojack. Another tough fight. Cojack is a little pervert, always getting underneath Plastic Fantastic and lifting her skirt.
Miles got under me a fair few times but the weight and shear size of my robot meant the MOI was against him so he did not manage to flip me. In the end I think Miles had slightly better control and could do more to me (lift if not flip or stack) so I am glad the fight went to him. (even gladder when I found out part of the skirt was found in his drive train post fight. Sorry Miles)

Fight 4. Annoying Box Rush. Another tough pushy fight. Lucky for me Aaron had lost one belt so was down to three wheel drive. His high ground clearence and 3 wheel drive dewalts/colsons were equally matched with my massive front heavy undervolted 18v drills and anderson combat wheels. Lost a bit of tread on the wheels from that fight, shame they can nolonger be retredded. Only one near new wheel left. Another judges decision in my favour thankfully. It was quite a fun fight for box vs box.

Fight 5. RoadKill. The less said about this fight the better. Road kill dominated the entire time and pushed me around like a rag doll. I could do nothing against him and he always managed to get under me. Even if he could not see where he was driving as I was on top of the little fellla more often then not. Judge decision but the winner was clear.

Sadly did not make the finals.

Rumble. Managed to hit scissorhands, demon and catastraphy in the rumble. Only lost the panels demon took off the previous day. Sadly not much damage. I the end, got highsided by some of my missing armour with catastraphy on top of me. Fun rumble.

Lessons learnt, always run your robot with a dead a123 in the pack. With the weight correct you get very good pushing power, traction and speed while using motors that have already been in fights. Normally I would have killed 2-3 motors in that many hard fights.

So the next feather robot will be a plastic spinner of some sort. This includes plastic spinning weapon. Will be interesting. Thanks Aaron for the challenge. Will need some high quality engineering plastic for this instead of my budget cutting boards.

First ant will be a hovercraft with a weapon yet to be finalised. I have two ideas. The ant will be for fun and will never win a fight as the second the pit opens I would be in it.

Does anyone have a picture of in tact dressed up Plastic Fantastic for the thread?

So in my typical organised fashion my bots are packed but I think the feather will need 5 hours of work to be battle ready and the ant is currently a pile of parts (postie just dropped off the key component 5 minutes ago).

Should be a good event.

As a general FYI, If anyone is thinking of buying a Laser or Navig8r sports camera don't.
I grabbed a cheap 720p one from Harvy Norman (http://www.laserco.com.au/navig8r/NAVSPORTMINI) $39 but it will not even turn on so doesn't look like I will have onboard video action in my feather.
A shame because the front armor of my bot is clear polycarbonate (12mm or 16mm, I forget).

Post event report.

My bot spent the best part of 4 fights twitching in the corner. By the end only one wheel turned in one direction. Not much to report. Best end to the fight was against Kojack as I did not simply end up stuck in the corner. He stood my bot up against the wall.
Next time if I move just before an event I will not compete. It is a waste of everyones time to verse my bot. Now time to build a good bot for nationals to end this last few years of pathetic attempts. Best get designing.

Nice work to Jules. Picaso just kept on going and absehd away at all the oponents with the axe.

I love Glen's flipper. Good to see high pressure flippers.

Again, nice work to all the people involved in organising it and Steve's family that are way to nice. Also godo to have three independent judges instead of the random pulling buildingers in. More consistant and easier for all.

Looks like my Anderson Combat wheels are finally on the way out. One more lost all its tread leaving just two partial tread. Given they have been in use for something like 7 years I am very impressed with the work from Russel and Jake. Shame they can no longer be retreaded.

If you ever fly out of a terminal with just Tiger be careful with LiPos. Tiger have their own terminal in Melbourne (well metal shed they call a terminal) and the first two security gues on the xray machines could not work out what a battery was and didn't think it could be allowed on or thought it was dangerous despite what I said. In the end, they finally got the boss who took all of 0.5 seconds to say it was all good and I had done everything correctly. I suspect they don't get the turn over to see these things often. Leaving Sydney, did not get the slightest look.
