Oddly enough Car seat actuators are geared 30:1 just like most drill gearboxs. The worm mechanism inside them is very unusual looking like plates rather than teeth. It reminded me of an icecream scoop. flat curved plates running through a synthetic hub.
Lots of suface area and no teeth to stuff up.
As far as power my tests have indivated that at 12 volts they stall under 5 amps. THey have more magnet area and thinner wire but very funky brush setup.
Thing to keep in mind with these is the placement of the front actuator pivot point.
Pinscher has it set back to speed it up but king pin has it closer to the tip for more power.
Pinscher uses 2 x 540 motors turning the same gear giving 6:1 on first stage and the second stage is the angle grinder giving another 2.7: giving you a total of about 18:1
Even though Pinscher is geared for speed keep in mind it uses a pair of the weekest motors around. Steeping up to Johnsons or similar would give you 4 times the power so its doing very well considering.
ANother influencing factor is that the actuator screws have been changed with a more efficienyt system/ Each actuator mechanism conatins 40 ball bearings for smooth movement and the new screw has increased its speed by about 70% just by having the thread more spaced out. Similar to a gear/
As far as lifting power Pinscher might have more actually, have to do more tests
Pinschers weapon setup can be expanded if there was physical space to hold up to 4 motors on the first stage. _________________ Bots that do not destroy you, only make you stronger.

on the topic of actuators does anybody know of a cheap alternative or any body in australia that i could get a robust, powerful and large actuator from.
SLow isnt a issue for this so i dont care if its slow or what.
pitty NPc dont have any more of those actuators to sell as nick had one but gutted it (was so painful to watch).
I need ths for my year 12 project (which is looking good in planning so far).
any help would be good. aaron gave me some links but the australian one i forgot.
thanks. _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

HeHe, its going back together just as soon as I find a faster motor with the right diameter shaft! I'm aiming for weaker and much faster and will probably ditch the first stage of reduction _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

Andrew's post prompted me to get on with modifying the NPC actuator. It was a bugger to get apart and had to be ground open. The reduction consists of a worm gear on the motor shaft driving a large plastic gear that in turn drives a 1:1 bevel gear attached to the base of the screw jack. It looks ideal and easy to replace the wimpy plastic gear with a bevel gear set. 2:1 and an EV Warrior size motor would be heavy but powerfull, while a 3:1 and a smaller motor might be more weight efficient. However I look at it, this is one interesting project and the only big problem is how to attach the motor to the actuator body. _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

there pretty good but something more like the Npc one would be better is possible.
Nick look at those fast motors with worm drive on it on webpage as they maybe could get used. _________________ Andrew Welch, Team Unconventional Robotics

Do you have to have a switch in your bot?
Or can you just have the battery plug as a removable link basicly? _________________ Tim Team Reaper.

If it can function as a removable link, and can be easily disconnected should the bot go out of control, then id say yes, but I guess its up to event organisers really . . . _________________ Jeff Ferrara

All you need to be able to do is completely shut down the robot within 60 seconds, with a manual disconnect. (A switch, battery connector or link) to comply with the rules.
So a battery plug is ok, provided you can get to it without major disassembly (>60 seconds) of the robot or endangering yourself in the process. _________________ Great minds discuss ideas. Average minds discuss events. Small minds discuss people

4 bolts undone bye hand then i can get to it easy so 60 seconds is easy just saves me wiring up a switch _________________ Tim Team Reaper.

having to undo the lid to take the batteries off doesnt sound too easily accessible to me, but i guess with 1 day left its a tad late to change it now ey _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

It's not to stop the bot if it goes out of control it's to stop it going out of control in the first place _________________ Team KO
