As far as I know there are 1 or 2 ant wedges currently in existence. Does the knife with wheels count? And aaron has a Ti Wedge. So 1 maybe 2 out of what like 30-40 ants.

There is a high proportion of spinners but damage they do is not really comparable to the higher weight classes. Hell a flipper I built in ~30min beat glens uber spinner with a kid driving it. Its nose got bashed but that was a 30 sec fix with a hammer and it went on fighting to come second. (waits for someone to point out it got beaten by a spinner, cmon it had exposed wheels and I was driving the other robot) Other spinner fights resulted in servos getting stripped as I am using $2 servos so had to replace the gears in em. (You can buy gears from HK for like $0.30 and it was 5 min job as everything is taped it)

Non-spinner/non-wheeled class may be a feasible and interesting but unless there is actually a few built to prove it I am doubtful anyone else will follow suit and this discussion is largely pointless.

I may be wrong as I wasn't convinced about ants when we started out. I had the "too small" and "too easy to build a spinner" arguments. But after we actually built a few, they are a lot of fun and some of the stuff is just crazy. I would argue it does change the style of building as things don't scale linearly.

This may seem a bit off topic but I guess what I am trying to say is ants provide an alternative where spinners are not quite the same and wedges are not prevalent. Creating something which walks while cool does not lend itself to any form of reliability. On a feather scale I can't see how I could build one for <$500 and/or many hours of work and as far as encouraging new people and keeping things going I think that is a step in the wrong direction.

I built Flying Wedge for a couple of reasons.

- I wanted to see how 1mm titanium worked as armor
- I wanted to try out my 50:1 HP drives which are too fast for my spinners to use effectively
- To make up more robot numbers for the Serial Space event (You know, supporting your EO Wink )
- There was no other wedges around...

The antweights at the moment are currently ruled by a flipper, a frustratingly simple, servo powered flipper... It wins because it's reliable, has a good driver and has a good design Smile

Thats fine, but Im not really interested in building something "frustratingly simple".

I am already a good driver, and a "good design" in weight-limited classes is one where all unnecessary weight has been eliminated, leaving just the bare essentials required to function efficiently.

I want to build something interesting, creative, complex and not have it run over by a miniature lawn mower every outing...

I'm not concerned about "Winning" through being the most efficient simple design, driven well.. thats of little interest.. Coolness, not Competitiveness is what motivates me.

Doesnt matter, I'll get back to tinkering with my Cars, it was just an idea.

I'm building a Theo jensen inspired walking salad bowl for a uni assignment, there's no way I'd attempt something like that in a combat environment but I think what's cool about this sport is it lets people compete in something they can use their skills, and at the same time improve them for other purposes.

That's something i've been trying to tell my robot club kids to no success... Confused

I can print a few sets if we want a combat walker class...

If anybody is seriously interested in a "walker" class of robots there is a competition known as "Mech Warefare" running in America with humaniods and quads shooting bb's at each others target plates. The approximate entree fee in terms of hardware is ~$1500-$2000.

Details can be found on the following sites.
http://mech-warfare.com/ (Official website)
http://www.trossenrobotics.com/ (Humanoid and walker kits)
http://forums.trossenrobotics.com/forumdisplay.php?121-Mech-Warfare (The forum with the build reports and rules and similar)

I am currently tinkering with one of the bioloid kits and will toss up a few photos or vids of the results at some stage.
