Pretty cool idea that! Sounds as though they're basically pumping electrolyte into the car and out again like normal fuel. I guess they'd recharge the electrolyte at the station and reuse it or something like that?

Trying to work out how 1 tonner axles are supposed to be stronger.

Both axles have the same bearing with the same 35mm id and are both the same length.

Axle one starts at 35mm and tapers down to 30mm at the splines.

Axle 2 starts at 35mm and remains 35mm for most of the length until it then dips to 30mm for the last 200mm at the splines.

Axle 2 is supposed to be stronger and handle more weight?

I cant see how this is as both axles have the same thickness where the load rests on the hub and the same thickness where they insert into the diff and the twisting would start.

To me both would snap at the same 30mm point at the splines from high power or both would snap at the 35mm end with too much weight.

Its like saying we made the middle of the chain bigger but left the end links the same thickness.

Could someone enlighten me on this?

3 thoughts
1) the neck at the end could cause a stress concentration possibly leading to fracture over time.
2) heat treating, the weak one could be as turned the strong one might be annealed and tempered after machining.
3) different steels, one could be a "higher" grade of steel and they use the same gubbins in the rest of it (bearings etc) just to make things easier.

Good point after looking at the difference in shape soo much the thought skipped my mind on them using better steel.

#2 will be more rigid over its length, so will be able to handle more weight on the hub end without causing bending / whipping.

From a torque point of view they shouldn't be much different, but #1 will twist more of its length, which might actually be worse overall for strength.

Absolutely no idea about cars but +1 on dumheds comments.

And yes the sharp step in #2 may concentrate shearing force at that point and make failure more likely.

Nah, it would smash into the radiator haha. Probably less than ideal. I want to set it up down near the bottom of the fairing so it gets really close to the road when you hook it round some turns, but there's no where for the safety lanyard to go. Have to get a longer one!
