Little Nipper's hydraulic crusher arm, looking like a giant terminator dick Laughing

The only damage that 722 received during the event - he chickened out of whiteboards after getting that little scratch Razz

Most of the pit area

Most of the robots.

I had a kind of frustrating, but good event.

Valkiri3 is a monster.
Unfortunatly , only the arena has felt the power of our weapon.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsiDj_D5nTQ

Damage to the opponents. A small corner removed from Decimators frame and a few chunks from the meters thick HDPE of Hatchet, what removed Valkiri3 with is scoop, made by me....

Hannibalito3.2. After a good run at the MMM event, and a good test session at home before leaving H3.2 decided to act up in the UK.
1 example. The HK 2858 inrunners have a screwed construction, not a stamped housing like normal brushed motors, and the front plate decided to undo itself in the first fight, pulling the pinion out of the gearbox.

The other issue is the lack of decent RC switches that can take 36V. We fried the only one we had -battleproven over 4 years tough-.
And the replacements we scrounched did prove unreliable. The battleswitch is plain rubbish, and the Nipper guys did provide a good one, but that is so protected it can't power the solenoid we use in a dependable fashion.

Oh well, learned a lot, and we'll come back stronger.

A more elaborated report.

Thursday morning. Knowing that the machines are ready, having them checked before leaving home, we wait for the fights. But alas, Murphy was around, and his first hit. 1 Robot, 1 Driver. Only Leo is experienced, so we decide, Leo will handle Hannibalito, I will try to control Valkiri

First fight with Valkiri. Beauty in the ring. 3-2-1 Activate, and I react like a recently flattened snail. BOOM, 1 flip and Valkiri gouges the polycarbonate deeply, OOTA, case closed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDaO6BdTtKM

Hannibalito goes in the ring, Spur2 and Rabid M8 as opponents. During test test at home and the tech check everything was in working order, in the arena 1 drive fails. That was that. Done.
After checking, it's the brushless motor that unscrewed itself. The front plate is in essence a large bolt with a very fine thread, and that came undone far enough to disengage the pinion.

Second fight of Valkiri. In the arena, linking up, only the esc of the disk is beeping "Hey, signal please". The rest is dark and silent. Try linking up again, no result. Forfait the fight and on the workbench we diagnosed and remedied the problem even before the fight was finished. The servoleads from the reciever to the IBF esc weren't connected.

Second fight of Hannibalito. Having difficulties driving ,it was difficult to avoid the opponents or flip them. After getting turtled , everything stopped. Fight over again.
No real damage tough, even with Drumroll in the arena. Minimoth is a tough nut to crack, and incredebly well driven.
Again opening up the robot , and the reason for the total black out. The custom RC switch we use for years now failed. The BEC from the esc's can't cope with that kind of load, and browned out.
Scrounged up a replacement, a battleswitch , and it looked like it would work.

Hannibalito's third fight. Galactus and Spur2.
The borrowed battleswitch is rubbish, totaly unreliable.
Galactus went first into the pit, Hannibalito got stacked on top of it. Luckely that Galactus's drum doesn't do a lot against HDPE as it was still going full pelt untill leo asked the driver to stop spinning and ramming the pit-walls.

Valkiri's third fight. Decimator and Hatchet. Everybody was eager to see Decimator and Valkiri going head to head.
I have to admit, I was a lot less eager, and Sam, Hatchets driver wasn't relaxed either. But it's Robot Wars, not Barbiecuddling. So we went for it.
I tried to steer Valkiri towards Decimator, and Glen was returning that favor.
After a painfull exchange of blows and a bit of gyrodancing, Decimator in the pit, and Valkiri on Hatchets scoop (stupid me welding that up last year). A race to the sidewall, and BANG The results are ratehr spectacular. The big loser, the arena again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qsiDj_D5nTQ

That was the end of the competition for us. That ment it wasn't worth trying to repair Valkiri (or was it Valriki?), Decimator peeled 1 corner open like a sardinecan.

We went whiteboards with H3.2, to find further problems, and solve the drive issue's. The only thing we lack now is a decent RC switch.
We're going for a shotgun approach (aka, Nicks beater solution, source everywere)

Leo, Kos(Jeroen) and Babs can write better reports with more information from their perspective.

One thing I have to mention. Leo arranged our hotel nearby the venue (less than 15 minutes drive). I was impressed. Never stayed in such a fine hotel before.
My experience is with places like Travelodge, Premier Inn, even Formule 1 or the hotel we use for the German Events in Bochum, a small family run hotel build in the 60's and the only thing changed are the showers and some of the furniture (with Ikea stuff).

Best Western Manor hotel in Meriden gets 2 tumbs up.

The in hotel bar & grill "Houstons" has a small but complete menu. Ranging from snacks like nacho's with different toppings, to flatbreads with other different toppings, trough pasta's and steaks, but what I remember best are the hamburgers.

The hotel restaurant is somewhat more expensive, but the awards do tell the truth. it's fine eating, albeit with "civilised portions".
The exclamations of Leo and Babs when they tasted the desert, chocolate mousse urged me to have one myself. I won't kill for it, but robbing a baby....

Okiedoke, finally made it home, unruined my computer and internet setup the parents managed to ruin (don't ask.. ugh). Time for pictures!

If anyone has an issue with the pics being posted let me know and i'll take em down Smile

M&J - Awesome is an understatement, it's epic Very Happy If you go to one international event make it this one.

Prepare 4 photodump in random order:

Hueheuh, perfect planning! (was actually 50g over with the 6s, and dead on with a few bolts taken out)

The way their door works is great. It's got a big vault style wheel turning a car steering rack, which operates a shipping container style locking mechanism. It works great, until shard flys into it Razz

Decimator drives like a boat - it doesn't want to stop once it's moving so it gave the arena a bit of a pounding lol. Put a nice dent in some chunky steel. I think it was 5mm

Conker - it has a huge scorpion 50 size motor in it and the beater turns mega fast. It seemed to have a few electrical issues this year.

Binky - Has a demon size blade with another huge scorpion in it. Decimator made a bit of a mess of it though in the first fight. Nice to finally be on the other side of the fence though as it's usually me having my blades ruined by horizontal spinners, lol.

Hatchet - aka luckiest robot of all time. It managed to fight almost all the big spinners and somehow escaped death vs all of them. Credit where it's due though, its well driven and pretty reliable.

Massacre - Really nicely engineered. the bar is gigantic as well, must have been at least 800mm and it span really hard. Unfortunately it had problems all week and had a mega ESC explosion (Decimator went on to have an identical one, eek)

Blurry Beauty 8 - Curious thing is it has some huge cast aluminium buffer tank with fins all over it. Wouldn't have thought it could take the pressure but apparently it does.

Beauty 2 - pretty similar to the other one. Both really well driven robots.

DB10 - Actually a nice robot i think will do well when Ed gets the small issues sorted, its really fast and the blade packs a pretty big hit when it gets someone.

Overdrive - Apparently built in one night. For what it's worth it actually drove around all weekend and the weapon did throw someone out of the arena Smile That shaft tho haha.

722 - Shittest robot of the comp by far. Motor failures, bearing failures, fuse failures battery failures. Might as well just bin the thing honestly ;p

Nah but really it's a very sleek robot, well driven and the drum hits very hard.

Killer Joule - Grants robot is friggin epic, All CNC machined replica of the heavyweight BETA. It hits hard and managed to smash in a few peoples top armour. He finished it the day before the comp too, pretty great. How many gears do you think one robot can have?

360 - didn't enter but it's a sweet rep of hypno disk. It even drives the same

Predator - That one is James coopers i think - it's so intricate you could just look at it all day. Even cooler was that it got entered in the main comp with razers Ian Lewis doing the driving Very Happy

Catharsis - Shame this one had some issues cause it's by far my favourite. Will be really hard to beat once its working. The robot is ridiculously tiny, but it has a monster blade with a hubmotor in it. The whole disk was wire EDM'd and had some amazing detail to it. Everything is shock mounted inside it too. The design is just super sweet.

Oh and the top is made from carbotanium Surprised

Shard - This one is pure machining porn. Everything is CNC'd with lots of titanium. Has magnets holding it down too which is really cool. It drove awesome with them in which gives me ideas...

PORN - the gearbox and clutch housing. The sound it made was very cool.

More porn - the gearbox has a lip that locates it all, and the gears are all custom pocketed out. niiiice.

So much detail -

NST - from the same maker as shard. It's equally as well built. The whole drive is CNC'd and the weapon is driven off a dewalt motor that is almost entirely rebuilt. Super reliable as a result and it hits very hard. Did i mention the blade is ENORMOUS. Ended up winning the annihilator Smile

Little Nipper - all titanium and aluminium hydraulic crusher with something like 4 tons of power. They couldn't run it at full power as it would bend the frame i heard. Definitely did quite a bit of damage!

Huge scorpion running the pump

The ram is apparently 100% titanium, eep D:

All of this gave me some serious cnc envy

Damage pics!

I think it was shiny that ended up breaking it's beater. Nick had expected it would as it was a similar design to mangles at the nats.

I think mr mangle did this to little nipper. Curiously is that most of the guys don't take many precautions with welding ti. they just kinda do it and when it breaks off they reweld it again. Which is fair enough really. Some detail of the drives shown too - this team had some fantastic machine work.

Salvador dali bot - or hatchet after NST got a swing in on it

Binky after Decimator had a go at it, the whole bulkhead was bent and sheared in the front where they machined it down -

This is the front of wedgie after the first fight - it's titanium i believe. The guy was literally grinding for about 2 days to get it back together haha, i felt a bit bad Razz

Decimator made a right mess of defector, the bar really carves plastic nicely. So look out Sean! Razz

I need to see the vid again but it somehow managed to pull the whole drive out of the robot.

Decimators damage to minimoth which is very nicely made. The front wedge was titanium but i dont know how thick. I think it was two bits of 1.5mm or so. A whole corner of it was basically missing though.

The drive on minimoth is real interesting too - it uses a pair of huge quadcopter motors with sensors and its 6wd. The drivetrain sits in a pair of hugely thick uhmw pods milled out. Was reliable too.

Decimator managed to remove the corner of valkiri, but he reciprocated with some damage to the top of my frame. Fortunately for him the plastic body is basically hollow Razz

Massacres esc detonation. I can confirm the yep 150s do like to explode a little bit Laughing

Decimators damage to flow - it took the front titanium off of one side and put a gouge in the 10mm titanium arm. But the hit was so huge it ripped the tz85 off the vhb tape, busted its cable tie and ripped the inductor off the board of the ESC. Da fuq!

Alien power motors from someones robot, maybe twisted sister? I heard it just exploded Shocked not surprisingly, look how sloppy and loose those windings are.

Little nipper also did some damage - glad to see something other than a spinner doing so.

Bent the top braces on tormenta a bit - i think it was also bending in the top over the ESCs that resulted in a tap out. Not too sure though as i didn't quite see the fight. I didn't get any pics of tormenta but it is a very intricate and well thought out machine. I noticed it had a bunch of tiny little things done to the dewalts that took a while for me to sort out on cobra through experience. Ellis obviously did his homework Smile

It managed to give Nicks ESCs a bit of a squeezin' as well. Luckily i think it just missed the main bits and only caught a capacitor.

Damage to decency. - $17 for a hot dog? SERIOUSLY.

So many robots!

The winners. The ceremony was great, confetti cannons, champagne spray and all Very Happy

The alienpower motor is from Anubus/Caliope. The german entry.

On tuesday it drove reasonably well here at the house of Chaos after Leo and René fiddled with the settings of the ESC's and TX/RX

Once in the arena, Mr Murphy was in the house.

The sensors in that Alienpower look all bent up - was that from the motor windings breaking or from disassembling the motor afterwards?

@ Nick If the shape change on the hale sensors isn't shock damage, it's shoddy workmanship.

@ Glen. The armor idea was a failure. It was too strong. if you wouldn't have mangled the "outrigger" that much, the little control I had would have stayed. Now, due decimators damage, I could only use the drive on the right side, as the armor was lifting the wheel for the floor....
If it would have been softer, Decimator would have sliced it without more complications.

But the rebuild includes very sharp sloped hardox armor....

And Hannibalito has a new switch.... anybody craving for airmailes?
