I like, if it works well it could be a nice easy solution to get rid of needing grub screws.
Are you planning to support the can? _________________ Remember to trust me, I am an Engineer.
That looks awesome.
We never had a whole bunch of luck replacing the plastic around the ring gear, but we probably weren't lining things up well enough _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

Im thinking it should be pretty tough. Its feels exactly the same as a real drill.
So this would have the 50mm aluminium box section over the top with the four holes drilled in it. the ali will keep all the nyocks in position so it can be mounted secure in the robot.
What i like is it gives you a heap more shaft that is hidden inside the drill bushing. Im using 123d.
i wasn't going to worry about supporting the motor cause it just bolts on the back like the magnum motors do. As long as there is no weight on the motor it should be fine. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

It runs very smooth, definitely comparable to the original. Much shorter as well meaning there is enough shaft left to shove a bearing on the end with no extra work at all.

good to seeā¦.hows it sound when you put upwards pressure on the wheel? if you have that outer bearing it should work well. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

Yeah been working on that... but it gets real fiddly trying to have enough room for the little motor screws aswell as a plastic support. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

I think that this mount would work with my sportsman design (the first mount that is, as I'm not keen on rebuilding the gearboxes for my first 30lb bot), but I'm wondering about using a single piece of aluminium box section across the bot with a motor mounted each end (and obviously holes cut out for wires to fit through). The idea is that it would add structural stability to the chassis, but I'm worried that the motors might overheat. Do the drill motors get warm enough in a 3 minute fight for that to be a concern?

Drill motors generally get hot, but enclosing them in a large tube probably won't make much of a difference. You can always cut out some vents with a hole saw, which would be a good idea to save weight anyway. Perhaps you can fit the ESCs in there as well for some extra protection? _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

It would make a bit of a difference but overall it's probably not going to be the limiting factor that makes your motors overheat. Too Many Volts, lots of pushing and other things will have a bigger effect.
In any case a few holes around the area where the motors are should allow enough air to flow that its essentially the same as if they were in open air.

Thanks guys, weight was a concern as well, but the hole saw idea would certainly work for both. Given the planned width of the bot and the length of the motors the ESCs won't fit inside the box section, but I was planning on attaching them to one side of it for some extra protection.
