I wonder if the gallery has any upstairs windows that open? Running a duct vertically up to the first floor would not get in people's way so much and would be a shorter run.

Due to the issues with lipo smoke and the crowd I would probably prefer to try and clean the air inside the arena rather than venting unless it can be ducted all the way outside.

@steve I agree

Meters of ducting ie. inside to outside would create huge pressure drops and the time taken to clean the arena would be much longer than estimated. That is with or without the filter and even then, without the filter the smoke would end up somewhere near the crowd/public not caught in the carbon...

I would suggest simply recycling the air in the arena via the fan/filter using one of the following methods.

1. Mount the filter dead center in the middle of the arena inside roof in parallel via jack chain (wraps around the filter creates a cradle & eye bolts http://www.bunnings.com.au/zenith-6-x-50mm-stainless-steel-eye-bolts_p3967742 attached to the frame 4-5 would probably do (I know a bot "could" impact it, would not really detract from the viewing as everyone is watching the floor/also because it's not static if it were to be hit it could still move/swing a bit) attach a spigot on the inside and outside of the a polycarb section of roof closest to the filter and run duct from the filter to inside spigot and duct from the outside spigot to the canfan.

Keeping the filter and fan close together is important as to reduces flow rate drops.

From the Canfan pick a corner of the arena (not the door corner) attach another spigot and run the duct to it, hence pulling the "lipo smoke/misc. fumes" through the filter and pumping it "cleaned air" back into the arena.

2. Mount the filter Outside the arena roof - Make a big polycarb box that the filter sits/lays in parallel to the roof with several holes cut in it minimum 3 x 200-250mm holes to account for the filters surface area. This would have to be air tight otherwise that nasty lipo smoke would get to the crowd way faster. Attach the can fan / duct / spigot and pump the air back that way.

From my experience working in the Industry selling these products I personally would choose option 1. as it would be the fastest setup time cost effective only two 250 mm holes need to be cut in the roof polycarb and 4-5 holes drilled for the eyebolts. This method would be the best solution imho.

Option 2. is alot more involved and simply not as efficient! would achieve the same result but would take 2-3 times longer in that time spectators will leave .

With option 1. @225 liter a second and approx 58 cubic meters of arena volume theoretically the arena could be cleaned once in 3 minutes, taking into account a 20-30 % drop in flow for the filter and 5 odd meters of flexi-duct 3:20 - 4:10 minutes, resulting in a approx "full" clean time of under 10 minutes 2 and a bit passes.

So guys got a few things we should do to arena before nats.

Would be good to work out good method for keeping the panels from bowing out.
We should also work on how to mount the filter in the arena
We should clean the roof poly
We need more arena lighting.
We should also revise the Mounting of the roof panels.

The trailer is also overloaded. So need to work out how we can lighten the setup.

Any other things we need to think about?

Steve

How much weight do you need to loose in the trailer? Is the weight from estimate or weighed on a weigh bridge?

Few hundred kgs it's over the 2.5 tonne.

Making the roof beams out of Ali was one of the first ideas as that is easiest to change.

Is the floor underlay MDF? Changing that for plywood will save some weight.

It is, MDF would be 5-10kg lighter per sheet.

For the walls bowing out what about putting some packaging steel strap under the floor then attaching it to those steel sections between the panels?

Something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/19mm-x-290m-21-5KG-Heavy-Steel-Strap-Strapping-Packing-Roll-Black-NEW-/281344441222?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_15&hash=item41816f7b86

Treat it as disposable, just chuck it after each event.
I'm sure we could make up some kind of clamp that could be welded on to the steel to grab the tape.

(I don't know if the poly straps would be up to it, but you can get a Km of the poly for the same price)

Good idea, we could make a tensioner to draw the walls against the floor before clamping the strap.

I was actually thinking steel cables and putting grooves in the bottom layer.

like it …i was thinking car seatbelt material(thats tough but also has some flex) …with some kind of tensioner like those buckles on the side of a semi trailer. we could just tie it to one side then crank up the pressure o the other.
