can ya do imperial thread on a metric lathe?

Hi gang
I want to add 32 tpi to a 1" bar of ali…the pitch is 0.8…or do i need to find a die with those measurements.?

i want to make several lens plugs for a c-mount camera socket.

depends, you really need the imperial leadscrew for them usually, but sometimes you can get one close enough that it will work. There are lots of calculators online, you put the leadscrew pitch and the gears you have then it will work out the closest combination.

32 tpi to metric pitch is 32/25.4=1.2598pitch
what lathe are you doin it on?

My El Cheapo Chinese lathe has change gears so I can cut imperial thread. can doi metric as well.

Just have to combine the right gears on the right support spots on the adjustable supports. And for that, I have a handy Chinglish guide.

Thanks for the feedback guys-that would be handy haveing the different gears for metric and imperial 😃we got a al250 halfco- i did a bit of testing last night without any luck but i think that was more me forgetting how threading works- might have another crack at it tonight- cant seem to find a die with those measurements anyway😡

The AL250 specs only mention metric thread cutting but if you are making a body cap with only a few threads on it, close enough might be good enough.

Yep they are body caps but i want two of them to support rods that hold an anamorphic lens on the front of the exiting camera so a bit if strength is needed
