Brushless Drill Motors

Has anyone ever tried to put a small brushless on a drill gearbox?

I am wondering if this could be a compact solution to my robot design problem.

Last week I ordered a pair of 200W gear motors to mount. Need to order parts for my lathe to repair the damage I caused and then can make adapters. Plan will be to customise some firmware for TZ85as to run them to start with. (Massive overkill but should make it semi bullet proof ESC wise)

I have started curating all the custom firmwares I can.

SimonK (Assembly)

RenatoPub (C)

Twisted

BLHeli

The real issue is that all these firmwares are meant for planes. Will be interested to see if they can translate to a drive ESC.

Nebelwerfers drive works fine. In Hannibalito it's a bust. The machine moves, but not well enough to satisfy. And finding bigger brushless with a 3.2mm shaft is a problem.
Most are 28mm motors with a ribbed housing and a different bolt pattern.
Most decent 36mm brushless use a 5mm shaft, and I don't have the tools yet to drill and ream original pinions.

I can easily drill & ream pinions to 5mm for you, but most drill gearbox pinions are far too small to drill out to 5mm. Is there any reason you can't use a low KV in-runner like I have in Mr Mangle? They almost always have 3.18mm shafts with a flat that pinions will slip straight on to.

Has anyone tried SimonK with reversing enabled?

This continues to be something that I have on my mind. Unfortunately time always seems to be what I am short of.

As quite a few of you may have seen Gene had some great sucess with the Afro ESCs and Reversing SimonK. Spending a bit of time hacking around with the software on Tz85A recently has inspired me to try this on the ESC.

It shouldn't be too hard so will keep you updated with the tests. Is anyone interested in a BotBitz Brushless TZ85a tuned for Drive motors?

Its definitely interesting - what sort of brushless motors do you think the TZ85a will drive?

I'm more than happy to have a "tuned" 50A+ 6S affordable "car esc".

So yes, go for it.

I ported the config file from the BB85a to SimonK lastnight.

Haven't had a chance to flash it hopefully this weekend.

Eagerly awaiting such a reprogged 85.

I do have a nice axe setup waiting for a speedo.
A NTM5060 coupled to the 31-1 gearbox on Kashei.
Just can't find a decent esc that can be "adjusted" to the task.

i like the tz size and shape better than the trackstar escs that are so chunky….so does reprogramming just make em go reverse aswell?

You'd have a very popular ESC on your hands if you can make this happen.
