Cool well be in it. Smile

Don't think there are a lot of other horizontals out there.

Going in to fight Bender 2&3 , Badger ( Rotwang tank rush team tactic ) and 2 or 3 others.

Must say driving home with 6 out of 6 bots still running felt wrong last event.

Don't think there will be any danger of that if we do this.

Good barging rights if you can do it.

I am currently working on a melty ant, with the aim of super sizing it for next years nationals

Edit: I'm also the crazy one attempting a ring spinner. I have a lot of work ahead of me Laughing

Decimator:

The last part of the motor installation is complete now that the top support ring is welded and the support shaft is machined to length. I accidentally cut the shaft a bit short and had to make a new one; given the extra length, I used titanium to keep the weight down:

New tools:

I finally got the toolpost grinder mounted on the lathe:

It was advertised as fitting my little C4 lathe but that's stretching the truth a long, long way! I managed to find enough aluminium to hang the grinder off the side of the saddle and it seems to work so far. The first job for it is fixing the issue below:

Decimator:

I calculated the driving speed and at 22.2V, 99mm wheel and a 16:1 gearbox the no-load speed is 27 KM/H! Shocked There is no way I can drive Decimator at that speed without smacking into walls so the plan is to grind down the 5mm motor shafts to 3.17mm and use a 27:1 gearbox to get the speed down to 16.5 KM/H. That will also provide more torque, better low speed control and may lower motor temperature.

Its going to be challenging as the in-runner motor shafts can't be separated from the magnets, so the whole assembly will have to go in the 4-jaw chuck, or a collet if I am very lucky.

Sawnado:

The new wheels came out really well. They have far better grip than the narrower Colsons and with the new out-runner motors Sawnado will have more speed as well:

Once the new drive train is working, I will make larger wheel pods to enclose the wheels and move them forwards for better weight distribution.

Decimator:

I assembled Decimator for a quick weight check:

Its starting to look like a real robot again Smile. With almost everything on the scales apart from the weapon bar, Decimator weighs 10.36 Kg; less than expected. I still need to make the battery compartment, belt tensioner and the power wiring, so if they weighed 360 grams together, that would still leave 3 Kg for the weapon - exactly what the original Bisalloy bar weighs! The new Ti bar & steel teeth will weigh around 2.3Kg, so there is a really good chance I can dramatically increase the kinetic energy with the spare weight Twisted Evil

Toolpost grinder update:

Once I got an Aussie power plug fitted and powered up the grinder, I discovered some 'extra special' Chinese engineering - the wheels all have around 2mm run-out! Shocked When you need a ruler rather than a test indicator to measure run-out, its a serious issue and there is some run-out on the side of the wheels as well.

I think its due to poor manufacturing of the wheels rather than the spindle, so dressing the wheels may true them up enough to use. Hare & Forbes has a cheap diamond point dresser so that's where I'm headed early tomorrow.

A tool post grinder is usually for really fine finish work, where you want a precise tolerance and a polished surface. There is surprisingly little on-line info on how to use them properly.

Roadblocks:

The fix for the toolpost grinder is waiting on a diamond dressing tool from OS to arrive - almost all the current projects seem to be waiting on tools or parts to progress Sad.

One thing to go on with is the lightweight. I set up a 44V test rig for the drive motors and while no magic smoke escaped and everything turned on command, there is a problem.

The motor is getting unexpectedly hot after just a short run; normally it would be high gearbox friction or sever over-volting, but the gearbox is silky smooth to turn by hand and the motor is getting 10% under it's rated voltage. I will get out more test instruments to measure the RPM and current draw; it could be the motor is mislabelled and rated for a much lower voltage. I can also try the motor on 10 and 11 cells but that reduces the weapon power - not a place I want to go!

I have found that no-load brushless testing can sometimes result in alarming heat. Normally in low pole inrunners in my experience. I'm not sure why it is, but the same inrunner(s) that would get pretty hot after just ~20s of running no load went on to spin Rango's drum just fine.

Might be something similar here. Tentative load testing might reveal more. I also found that the difference in heat between a 50cc Rotomax on 5s and 12s was really massive (cold always vs noticeably hot in just a minute or so of no load running) and yet in Pulsar they never actually overheated on the 12s.

Tl;dr: brushless is weird, no idea!
