Roller~Rotwang~Vic

Have started building a new experimental Drum bot, modular design with drive module similar to Rat’s only with a third red wheel mounted above and between the powered drive wheels to make it invertible.
The weapon pivots off the centre shaft of the drive bogies and can be quickly changed.
The weapons will be drums of different design; I wont to be able to experiment without building a new bot each time.
I am interested in small diameter high-speed high torque reasonably wide designs that might be effective in getting under opponents reliably

Took me a while to think through the sportsman class, probably shouldn’t beat myself up too much as I have been a bit distracted for a decade with some other things.
However I now find myself with a little time to think robot thoughts and sort through a lot of bot parts that have been moved buried in peat bogs and recycled as fire lighters by people other then myself.
Possibly slight exaggeration there but with sons moving back and forth accompanied by GF’s cats and dogs plus the possums totally taking over the shed the effect is somewhat similar.

I have been retreating indoors from the cold and dark. Trying to be productive, organizing various things bots included.

On to Roller and the sportsman class.

Apart from admittedly unavoidable rubbery KE weapon weight RPM saw blade token weapon sitch that the EO will have to deal with all good.

Lots of Ideas bubbling around for new bots and reworking old ones to fit.

One that I think is suitable for the sportsman comp is Roller; small diameter wide low rev bi directional high torque low mass drum with the invertible drives that I think was originally going to be part of Ballistic until we ran out of weight points.
4 drills 6 red wheels. Probably a drill with gearbox, chain drive drum. 6 A123

Self imposed limitation is no building any new designs until I finish various other commitments but I am allowing myself a little time to reassemble existing bots Roller just qualifies.

As an EO this is my take on the KE/RPM.

Unmodified saw blades <250mm are allowed at any RPM. Sparks are good for show plus can always take on some of the exposed wheels. A little token yes and probably not going to win you the competition but IMO as an EO simple, reliable and a crowd pleaser.

As for other spinning weapons you are limited to 400RPM. Nobody has really tested the limits of the High Mass/Inertia limits as of yet. Feel free to be the first. At this stage I impose no limits however if your weapon mass is greater than 1/3 of your robot please check with me before coming to an event if I am EO.

I find it a little hard to picture what 400rpm is. I cordless drill is what about 300rpm. I think you can still probably do damage but nothing like we see in the open class. I remember back to my first robot swinging a few KG of axes on a drill. It had a 1m radius and was scary but it wouldn't put a dent in anything these days.

Nothing like a 9 year and 4 month thread revival Smile

Looking forward to seeing Roller and someone from Victoria competing again Smile

Might be why the TX batteries are flat. Smile

Thinking about which way to go.

Try and get something started down this way or resign myself to traveling and hope someone holds an event somewhere.

Been reading lots of the threads trying to catch up with what’s been going on.

Not really interested in ants and beetles.

It's pretty much changed from lots of small backyard events to 1-3 big events a year these days.

Getting enough people together in Melbourne could be hard. Still spots open at nats.

Really like to just not possible this year.

Couple of thing I have decided are re assembles as many of our old bots as possible.

Partly I just like to have them together and working and partly if an opportunity to put on some sort of demo or other arises their good to go.

Sorting out some bots for the curent feather and sportsman class.

I think that a full width drum is outside the intent of the sportsmen rules. It would be very effective though.

With the number of VD’ s of one sort or another Benders tire armor could be a problem.
Works brilliantly against horizontals though.

Thinking spring steel if I can do it in the weight.

I remember that aluminum on the back of one of your horizontals’ didn’t work.

Rollers drum is progressing, raining again and stooping me from doing things I should be doing.
One of those obvious ideas that everyone thinks of is putting the drum drive motor inside the drum.
With the limited rpm combining with the limited KE capability's of sportsman opponents I think I can make it work. Smile
