Robowars Vivid

Well it has been a while since I tended to this build thread so thought I should do a bit of an update on lots of things.

So on the way to Vivid I had a brilliant idea that I would have lots of spare time so I should build four demo bots. Saw thing was a cop out and only output from that work. But lots of things were done.

Demo Bot Ideas
So one of the first ideas was to use a compressor lifter. I tried sourcing a bunch of gear from china but ran into a hurdle when I couldn't activate my western union account. I could get rams for relatively cheap and fittings and valves for almost free but just couldn't pay for them. I was willing to throw the money at it expecting nothing but couldnt even throw the money. China didnt want to deal with bank transfer or paypal Sad.

For a compressor however the K-Mart one for $20 is pretty much as good as you are going to get. Massive motor and way better construction than the $15 250psi RS550 versions.

Random Inductor

Decent Brushes

Is it lacking copper or is that just me, guess you don't get much for $20.

The compressor seemed to work pretty well but without a source of cheap rams I moved on to...... Drills!!!!!

Did I mention drills.

OMG Drills.

This pleases me!

I also tried some of the little 45A Xcar ESCs from HK

They looked really nice and people said they would work at 4S. Unfortunately the second time I plugged the first one I tried it in blew up. So that plan went in the bin. I didnt even get to drive with it. 2S maybe 4S NO!

For the drills I had to make some new mount so I took Mile's idea of the tube and gave it some CAD magic.

Batchin!

And there we have a bunch of drive motors.

Anyway so rams were out. So I got some threaded rod.

But time ran out and I ended up bailing for a super simple design and weapon.
$4 K-mart cutting boards

Is that a saw screwed to a wheel or... no thats a saw screwed to a wheel.

I wasn't surprised it drove poorly.

My real robots

Doolsaw was a bit of a rush job really just getting a saw blade bolted to it and a gearbox motor replaced.

It unfortunately did not last long against citizen flips. Despite making a lot of noise after a few flips the gearbox gears were very very unhappy. On inspection afterwards, one had shattered the plastic and the other had many stripped gears. High gear on a two speed gearbox and a poorly supported gearboxes with wheels on the outside where they will take impacts was a recipe for this but had hoped it would last a little longer.

The Disassembler
Worked really well.

I didn't expect it to last as long as it did.

Here it is after the comp a little battered.

Stop Balance Time!
Decided to be nice to all my batteries and spent about 14hrs putting all of Deathroll's and the Vivid batteries to storage voltage.

Re: Robowars Vivid

Looks like I need to visit Kmart. The compressors look quite decent.

After all these years your Dad I am sure has a few ideas on what does and does not work. This should be good.

That compressor motor is just weird! The whole thing looks prime for an outrunner upgrade.

So many drills! Saw Thing's weapon my have been ... interesting, but it worked well as a spare bot, and Deconstructor was remarkably effective with that winch motor.

Any chance of putting up those modified drill mounts? The ones Miles designed seemed to hold up well (although I haven't pulled them out yet, I want to take Zenghiaro more apart but I've been asked to drive it around at Owen's school again this week), but your modified ones look like they'd be easier to get in and out of the tube.

Also, your parents seem awesome, can't wait to see what your dad comes up with.

The drills seemed to go really well. The hardest part was printing em in winter with the warping. I also think the software mod on the UP makes warping worse.

Here is the file.... I think

Well had a little hiatus from actively building and missed my first event in quite a few years but looking forward to more activities in 2017.

For those that don't know BotBitz Wink was at Robot Wars filming in December. Was a good comp and some impressive bots. Probably not as impressive as Battlebots but still a good field. Hoping they make another season so stay tuned.

Got to do a bit of work in my shack hole. Tidied up but heat is making it pretty hard to get stuff done. Laser is lasering again. Another printer is repaired almost... Only lathe is on the list of things that need attention. I jammed crossfeed and shredded bunch of gears. Hoping I can get in touch with china directly again as hare and forbes are a rip off and get the parts I need.

No real plans for feathers at this stage but sportsmans are likely to be up first. So I think my old screwdriver friend The Disassembler will make an appearance.

Well shack hole got cleaned since this post then got lot more junk stacked in it.

Still sorta recovering from end of last year. Hasn't been much bot action but plenty of Botbitz action trying to keep up.

Got a few ants for comp on weekend we shall see how it all goes. Looking forward to hopefully designing a feather for this years comp and maybe something cool for vivid.
