Ah I see what you mean... I will try and see how much weight I can save from one of the weapon motors.

(about the overhaul vs cobalt match though, cobalt hit overhaul only in the steel wedges)

Any weight you can put into angling the sides would be weight well spent imo. It's much harder to bend the angled plate

Sloping the sides would cause the gyro dance to get a bit worse because the wheels will get high centered a bit earlier. It has its own benefits, but for a vertical spinner it may not be the best.

I find that a major problem with Mr Mangle and it just has vertical sides; definitely keep the wheels as close to the sides as possible for turning with the gyro effect.

Yeah vertical spinners can be a bit unstable at times. I was actually thinking about chamfering the bottom side of the side armor earlier today to combat the gyro effect, but that would interfere with the front wedge, which runs the full width of the robot.

Question: when doing modeling, do you guys tend to just extrude cut a 4mm hole and tell the one machining the parts it's threaded M4 or actually use the hole wizard in Solidworks?

Cad the final hole size and callout the thread size on the drawing for every machine shop I've used so far.

The machinist will make the thread whichever way is easiest, thread mill, roll tap standard tap etc etc Smile

Here's a handy document for tech drawings - http://omwcorp.com/how-to-design-machined-parts.html

Thank you Glen. That is really helpful.

There's just one thing I didn't quite understand in your post: what did you mean by "cad the final hole size". (e.g. should an M4 threaded hole be modeled as 3.2mm or 4mm?)

Probably 4mm, unless you want a particular feature. When you specify the thread, you can include things like the depth (particularly if its a blind hole), process, the % of thread engagement and more. If you just specify 'M4', the machinist will do it the fastest, cheapest way, which is sometimes not what you want. I would at least specify the depth and the thread engagement.

Thanks guys.

This morning I received an email on the upcoming events, and I think I will be in the one in Brisbane. How do you guys usually go there with your fighting robots?

I drive up because I take a huge amount of gear, most of the other guys fly up as its much less bother. You just have to be careful about packing Lipo batteries.

Well... It turns out that I was silly enough to forget about the screw hole placements on the Banebots P60s. Has anyone used them before and know the distance from the edge of the gearbox to the center of the screw holes? I just can't find the specs on their website. I found a few CAD files, but was not sure if they are accurate.
