Glen: I eventually figured out what you meant when you said i could cut those sections all as one peice. Then i decided that a little extra cutting and welding wasnt really going to bother me, since its easier to figure it out this way.

So,

TODAY'S PROGRESS

nearly all of the shell mild steel is cut out (stainless top layer will come last)

pictured with some of the gear in place (please ignore the angle grinder gearbox)

and no steel lodged in my eye Smile

Thanks Nick, just a good old Ozito angle grinder, took my time since id like it all to slot together perfectly.

Next step is to get a welding mask, and tack it all together using Bort's old gasless MIG, then figure out the shape to cut for the front corners, tack those on, then go visit Bort and stick weld it all together.

Meanwhile i continue sourcing shafts, bearings, and although i have some V-belt pulleys on their way from work, i have my doubts as to their suitability, so ill be looking for those too.

So i've tacked the mild steel together with the Mig, after buying an autodarkening helment today Razz I considered trying to stitch the whole thing together but rejected the idea as i like Tiggy goodness. So Andrew, im about halfway there, just need to cut the front bits off and tack in panels to fit the gap, then cut the stainless and tack that on. Then i come visiting Smile

Rofl, that is freaky. Gotta love the flux splattering. But hey glen, his tacks are actually fairly decent. Razz

haha, dont look too closely!

glen: wow that IS disturbingly similar! hehe

yeah pretty compact, i acheived that by drawing all the components to scale, then designing the shell around them. Theres a certain amount of clearance from each component to the outer shell, not too much wasted space.

Need to get some scales so i can measure what it weighs so far!

Progress

Today i cut the side panels flush with the front, and cut peices to go in the gaps and tacked those in too. Then i traced out all the stainless bits ready to cut tommorow. Ran out of time for using the grinder today or i'd have gone further with that!

Cut out all the stainless steel for the composite armour, and tacked it all in place today. Wow the Mig sure EATS that thin stainless!

It's extremely shiny. Im thinking about painting it tho.

My weapon motor is huge (300w scooter). I knew this all along and it works with the design (there is enough ground clearance at the back to allow the front part of the robot to be taller) but now that i have it all in my hands i find it offensively oversized. Any suggestions for a replacement weapon motor of similar power? (Its going to belt drive two small toothed disks)

By the way it will be invertable, i just havent cut the wheel holes yet (id like to line up the motor and driveshaft mounts properly first)

The flat pancake motors like Plan B used should do, they love excess voltage and should be fine spinning up some small discs

Agreed just make sure you find a way of securly attatching the pulley to the motor as the little screws tend to shear off.
