did some messing around with inventor 2010... much easier then the last version i had, and once i work everything out it should be as quick to do stuff as with rhino..
the component generators are awesome.. saves so much time not having to cad bearings, gears, belts etc
anyways, misfortune recadded in the new inventor:

yes i got really bored and did the wiring Confused

Nice work! Win , Lose , or Draw - I would be very happy to put my 30 years of IT experience up to endorse you for a CAD role anywhere you want to apply.

well still umming and ahhing over going to robowars.. but in the mean time till i decide i thought i'd best start building just incase i decide to go.

Frame has been ordered to be cut at oxycut, yay for $50 already half made frame Razz .
Ordered some angular contact bearings as well, not sure if they will be any improvement but meant to take a higher side load which is what i'm after.

After the frame arrives just gotta weld it all together and mount everything which should take no longer then a day or 2. then work on the fiddly bits.

*I'm also in need of someone who could machine up some drive mounts out of uhmw for me.. they have been known to be my downfall so a nice solid uhmw set would come in really handy.*

also a few friends seemed interested in coming down to robowars with me if i decide to go.. so i thought why not they bring a robot down as well. started cadding and came up with something like this:

bit of a downgrade from my previous cadding attempts, but not much detail has been put in just yet, also i suck really badly at cadding angles to all line up.
Basically its a lifter if you hadn't guessed, powered by a modded drill motor, teeth are a little overkill and will most likely be torn off but makes the cad look better Laughing

main plan for this was that even if the lifter breaks still is a solid wedge, which as we all know are very easy to maintain throughout an event..

started building the lifter today... i was having a look and i worked out i could use cyborgs old base and shell for this robot which was epic win, saved so much work...

Lifter motor is the only thing mounted atm, need to grab some more steel to finish off the frame, hopefully tomorrow or friday.

for tomorrow:
-Cut slots out of base for arms.
-mount drives
-weld supports for arm
if i have the metal finish off the frame, bolt everything together, wiring it then pray it all works Razz

piccies time: (from camera phone so not crystal clear)

pretty damn cool Very Happy youll have to put heaps of bracing above the arm to keep the base stiff cause cutting that shape from it will weaken it tons. maybe youll have to add another stage to that gearbox?

yeah will see how weak it goes when i cut the slots out.. hopefully shouldnt take much to strengthen it back up...
the gearbox seems pretty powerful as it is.. but only one way to find out once its done, worst case itll be a strong wedge.

Shit, you're almost done already! Gotta love a recycled build Smile

Do some tests on your lifter with videos on youtube, Glen-style? I'm interested to see.

well got the lifter in enough shape to actually lift something... seems to work ok, though struggles with heavier weight due to the gearbox not being clamped tight enough. so will have to work on that in the next few days.
anyways glen-style vid with snippet of some dyrodium techno Razz

photo also:

tomorrow should have enough steel to finish the frame and fit the shell then to make the gearbox solid as a rock.

awesome! haha ask and ye shall receive eh

yeah its not hideously slow. i wonder how it will go with a full weight robot? i imagine you'll probably be able to drive around half-lifted to some extent unless you snag on the arena floor, particularly if you round off the ends of the tubes a bit?

would proper gearbox/motor mounts like the ones you have on your drives work better perhaps?

Plan is to put a bearing on he end of the arms to help it lift things easier and beable to drive around while lifted.
Yeah proper mounts would help a lot but i didnt have any material to make any just yet.

did some thinking for the gearbox and going try using 2 drill cases the same and bolted them together using 2 plates with pins in the existing screw holes to keep it all centred, then just cut the D shape off one end to put the motor on.

todays work:
Drives mounted and back plate is welded to the base using some hefty 8mm steel, bit more then i wanted but was all i could get. cost nothing so not complaining..

this is the gearbox nearly finished, just gotta make the 2 plates to clamp it all together..

not much done today as it was stinking hot.
Finished the gearbox, seems pretty strong, will give it a decent test once i get the shell bolted on.

rough idea what itll look like when its finished.

all thats left to do is weld on some tabs and tap some holes to bolt the shell on then wire it all up Very Happy

love that design. its like the strength of a wedge with the ability to lift. should do pretty good if it all holds up Cool

Yeah, very cool. Couple of things: with the 'H' pattern cut in the base plate, is there much point in keeping the lower part of the H under the front of the wedge? It looks like its just dead weight to me, no structural advantage. The gearbox looks like a brand new idea Cool, how does it look inside?
