I disagree. If the mountings held out, the vertical would have won. Nebelwerfer does need a aluminium ring of some sorts to stop the bolts from getting ripped through the HDPE. But when it comes to the disks hitting eachother, the horizontal spinner loses much of its momentum just because it slams itself away just as hard as it hits me. while I have the mass of the arena and the world in helping me hit the opponent.

You cant just state "horizontal beats vertical every time" simply because its not true. With Katjuscha i have beaten horizontal, drums, eggbeaters and what not. And lost as well. It all depends on so many variables. Neither has a clear advantage over the other.

Orbit beat badger in the rumble but I think it just came down to luck as far as whose tooth was where when.

I agree with whoever said vertical vs. horizontal is short and violent.

Bottom line, Prolodju and Nebelwerfer (and Hyperion as well) are great ambassadors for the Raptor weight. None of the fights both robots did last weekend could be classified as boring, showing the UK roboteers that 6kg is not not nessaserely a pushbox on wheels. It is very wel possible to make a real cool robot in 6 kg, let alone 12kg (or 13,6kg).

If that message comes accross then im happy. Win or lose.

If I switch to A123 or if must be lipo, i can save a lot of weight to make the needed adjustments to the mounting. Right now i have 12V 7400mAh taking up almost 1.5kg of battery power.

I would generally agree with Assasin's theory - it's harder to build a solid weapon mount for a vertical spinner, so their frames tend to bend before the horizontal spinners do. A year of other bots pounding on Jolt has bent the base plate enough so you can see it if you hold a ruler against it, however the weapon still works fine - how many vertical disk spinners can claim a year with no frame maintenance?

Here's a thought - what would happen if a vertical spinner was built with a single thick weapon support arm? It sounds a bit crazy, but motorbikes with single rear suspension arms are rather popular and they don't seem to suffer from twisting. I recall seeing this in ant and perhaps beetleweights but not in feathers (yet). A single arm would solve all the bearing alignment problems and would probably end up weighing a bit less.

I think I've seen it done on a heavy as well, they used the single shaft to rotate the weapon while turning, to reduce the "gyro dance" effect.
