Going with my Team Overkill name, I try to size the batteries to not sag too much under load. When I designed Jolt, I figured on there being a sag under spin-up load and not much when the bar was up to speed - it mostly worked out. With Sauron, I am in uncharted territory, so the team & I are going to simulate the actual performance with a high current source (lots of paralleled car batteries) and an equivalent KE load - you might want to try something similar.

I thought about that, but I would have to purchase a motor first. And I'm doing all this to work out which one I need, and what gearing.

So if you had a design that needed 26V@40A, and you were going to use A123 cells.

You would use a 10 cell pack..about 2.6V per cell?

id be wary of that assumption considering a voltage drop that severe is only going to happen on start up and under normal load that thing will be pulling 33v worth of power.

i still think the neumotors are way to small for their power, but ill shut up and see what happens before i throw some money in that direction Cool

Idea
Once I have the drum made, I will setup a test rig and use a known motor(Dewalt). Observe current consumption, voltage, RPM, spin up time etc. Then make a educated selection of weapon motor.

Before you go investing $300+ into one of those Neumotors, why not pick up a few of the cheap UH brushlesses and see how they perform in regards to your needs. I could buy 2-3 test candidates at different sizes and windings and it would cost less then $100 and they could help you with picking the right Neumotor. Glen seems to have had a good run with his setup so far, even though he never lasts a full 3min match Razz

Thanks Aaron, food for thought.

Still workn on things, it looks like about 1000 Joules now. Nick how much is Jolt packing? Just for a comparison and interest.

I reckons your gonna find those drum teeth are too small for the size of the drum Razz But other wise, it's look very nice. Also wondered why you ditched your A123 packs, How much did the pre-made packs cost?

Trial and error maybe Aaron. I thought that too when I first looked @ it, but its waring on me.

Price? Don't ask Smile The pack kits are good value.

These guys - http://www.trextuning.com/motors.php - have a lot of actual tests of brushless motors at different voltages and compare them by weight, power output and current consumption etc.

It probably doesnt have exactly the same motor you do, but is good reading to give you a real-world feel for the different motors and their characteristics under loads etc. They're tests are usually quite well documented for batteries and bits as well.

I will start more parts this week, and post info.

Darn, looking @ that I need the drum teeth to have greater clearance. Thats a bugger Mad

The timing belts I ordered arrived today, and because of the small mistake I made I now need longer ones. There not to pricey, so it's not a big problem. But I will now wait for the drum to come back from hardening, before I order any more(will see the final size).

The drive pods will have some slight changes too, nothing to dramatic.
