Perth arena design
I have some sponsorship money from Curtin uni guild, and I'm curious as to whether I can build a decent looking arena for about $1000.
This is what I have so far.
3x 6mm Polycarb sheets
8m of 130x6mm mild steel bar
and some dodgy looking wood from somewhere.
It ends up 2x2m and 530mm high.
Comments, suggestions, or should I go buy some robotics kits from somewhere instead? _________________ They say that he crossed the fine line, from insanity to genius.

your picture is broken.
I'd go 3mm polycarb and make it bigger. Polycarb is probably about the only thing you cant scrounge.
2x2m is pretty small.
Otherwise look at an antweight arena perhaps? _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

i had a look at the arena in the morning and it didnt have any vertical frame or roof structure from what i saw, would be worried about the walls falling on top of people in that case lol!
you could probably get away with putting it against a wall or some such and just having 3x walls, or maybe make it 4 sided but with very low walls? _________________ www.demon50s.com - Minimoto parts

Well I was going to improvise the channels which hold all the walls up, and the roof is simply 2 sheets, supported on 3 sided. So if they are somewhat fixed along the middle join, I can't see it falling down to fast.
So do you thing that 3mm would suffice for most things except for high speed spinners?
Also is the 6mm mild steel thick enough?
I want too keep the 4 walls since it will be a mobile arena for open days and other events on lawn, in the tav etc.
Do you think that half a metre high is a bit low?
The pic is broken because the server is down for maintainance, it should be back soon. _________________ They say that he crossed the fine line, from insanity to genius.

Remember that the Robot Wars arena was only 6mm polycarb.
As long as you don't let the robots touch the poly you won't need it to be as thick at you keep hearing. Even the thin stuff you see on roles in Bunnings will do. I mean I haven't seen any Jolt's or Marauder's from Perth yet, and since it's for first time builders you shouldn't worry too much yet.
So just some sleepers around the base of the wall, plywood for 3 walls and thin poly for the other and you should be alright.
I think our arena is sitting at about $5000 if we build it ourselves.
