MiniMower~Rotwang Robotics~Vic

Struggling to get under the weight limit with the new MiniMower.

The Reboot Jolt fight gave us a lot of information and was one or the reasons I held off working on the new MiniMower but turning it into reality is tricky.

I can always lighten off the drum and I am going to have to do anyhow but I will leave that till last thing and just turn it down as much as necessary.

I think Rob intends to retire the original from the Featherweight comp, the new version is very similar in overall shape and proportion so I think it would be appropriate for it to just continue on in the ranking where the original left off.

Rob will post a few pictures but he didn’t get around to it before heading off to Melbourne for a few days.

Just to explain why MiniMower one of our oldest bots hasn’t had a build thread up to now is he was covered in the Robowars page before the Robowars Forum existed.

http://robowars.org/teams/rotwang/minimower/minimower.html
http://robowars.org/teams/rotwang/minimower/minimower-build.html
http://robowars.org/robots.html

Also the 4 fights showing in the Ranking are somewhat misleading, he has been in lots more fights than that but as they were demo events, tag teams, rumbles etc they don’t show.

Here is a peak at the upgraded MiniMower you may not have seen yet, as shown were trying to pack a lot more into the new Rotwang drum bot, to counter more varied assaults, flips etc. Noticeably proportioned like minimower with the wider drum & straight wedge which is more functional for pushing has a lower ground clearance compared to Reboot though wont have the victory dance.
Reboot seen here, resting in peace or is that rusting in pieces?

Given up on MiniMower for this event, ran out of weight points. Sad

Trying to build something to counter potential Overkill bots is getting tricky.

Reboot will fill in, Rob had a choice of Frag, Ballistic, Skelly or Bane2 but it has to be a Drum.

Late night coming up as Reboot is totally in bits.

Bump from the 3rd page for a big build thread update on what happened in the end of the noughties which for this robot is the most up to date fight information. I rummaged through old event threads in the state specific board collecting and copying over a lot of minimower relevant fight data. Rewatched all my old fights on youtube and listed a few favorites and finally included an update on the robots progress leading upto the 2015 australian nationals. Minimower spent an active 12 months after creation attending 4 competitions, 3 in Melbourne and 1 in Brisbane. Been a good exercise to update the build thread and secondly refresh my mind on how minimower performed.

Australian Nationals Ipswich 2015

27th August 2015
Drum teeth received a bunch of welding with hardface. Drum looks beat after a dozen or so fights in the 2009 Melbourne and Brisbane event.

October 2015

Finding all the pieces that got spread around after its event at Brisbane ideas festival 2009.
Electronics seem simple in this one.
Single direction Turnigy 30a brushless speed controller, scorpion xl, br6000 spectrum receiver.
The drum spinning in one direction is something id like to alter in the next version.

Inner skeletons getting some more tin work and the brushless needs to be moved across to make room for a battery upgrade.

More assembled now. Just a bit confused how do we have so much weight left? This robot was on the limit in the initial build. Later discover the colsons put on this time are the thinner version. Aha…Also originally had a blower motor instead of the tiny brushless. Look up in other pictures dad doesnt know what he was thinking, no wonder it was hard to get into the weight limit.
Can get some more armor now. some tin for the bottom and some full sized polycarbonate which screws onto captive nuts instead of being cable tied on.

Final inner skeleton

Outer shell

All together

Electronics progressed in the last couple of days. Now running a 12volt linear reg running cooling fan for heat-sinked xl. 5 volt liner reg for the rx receiver. because the 5 volt in the scorpion is not adequate. Still very compact.

fake blue box just to compare to skeletors electronics.

Minimower been difficult to get reliable. Brushless too quick in this arrangement. Tried a brushed motor from a weed whacker but it got hot on 5 cells. Might try a single stage planetary without a belt in future. Unfortunately not going to be ready for this event. Badger will replace it for dad and he's letting me drive bender.
