Robot Car Wars

Imagine taking an old sigma, RC it, and fitt it with a two ton flipper. Or fitting a vb commodore with a pneumatic hammer.
I'm sure there have many people around the world with this idea, though i was doing the math, and the vehicle you could get cheep, leaving all the $$$ for weapon and amour. secure the wheels and make the frame tough enough to handle being thrown a few meters in the air and you have a very cool robot fight.
takes smash-up derby to a new level.

It was done on Junkyard Wars and rather sucked. The concept is good but the practicalities make it harder to do than you would first think. I like the idea but where would you run such a comp?

a friend of mine offered this idea and the venue to do it

Unfortunately, his idea was out in the central australia desert, and you would have to watch it through binoculars from 10 miles away. Unless you have sufficient Polycarb to protect you from out of control collisions.

1000Kg+ of steel being powered by 50-200 hp of drive = one truckload of kinetic energy

In smash-up derby's the cars are mostly travelling in the same direction.. send them in opposing directions and they probably wont last very long.

You could try mentioning the idea of Radio Controlling a few of the smash-up cars they run at Speedway tracks to them, but I cant see it making making for a very long lasting show.

Radio Controlled Dodgem cars maybe ?

Driving a petrol engine is complicated enough being in direct control, rc it and things become lame very quickly... Way out of the league for almost anyone to compete in also. We need big robots in Aus, or even that offroad thing that was offered before. As Brett points out, location can make or break an event.

lol it wouldnt be that hard in the land of 6 channel spektrums. and control youll just buy an automatic Very Happy

as for cost funnily enough you CAN buy a car for $1. because the car dealerships on trade ins have to pay the scrap yards and metal yards to come and take the cars away (something like $100) if there too shitted to sell on. so if you walk in and offer them $1 they save $99 on getting rid of it Laughing

im pretty sure they did this on top gear as well and they got some pretty alright cars.

hmm... head on colisions. ill just get an x1/9 and make solid steel front end. i can see it now Laughing

but everyone complains that a heavy weight is too hard to handly and move between events. This would be worse.

I still think it would be easy to do, as glen said, you would only use an auto, an idea might be to get a front wheel drive auto and drive it in reverse. this would have a number of benefits, such as using a non-sincro gear as your drive, having the engine protected at the rear of the car and having a far better turning circle, thats why forklift's do this.

you would only need to armor the areas needing protection like the engine and wheels. no need for roll bars since there would be no people in the cars.
you would have to restrict the weapons to flippers, thwacks, hammers maybe crushing or lifting.

"there would be no people in the cars"

In that case, just cut off all the passenger area and make a short & low car-bot about 1/3 the size of the original. Even better, make your own chassis and bolt on the front wheel drive engine, except turn it 180 degrees so it drives forwards again. Instant rear engine, auto transmission robot, ready to have armour added. I almost want to build one now! Laughing

bob cat's (skid steer loaders) are very expensive, even a twenty year old rust bucket would e over 2k, same for fork lifts. cars though, all they are are, are, are, sorry. all they are is a cheep base, a $1 drive train and chassis.

like the idea of cutting it in half, I wonder if it would be a little front heavy since usually the engine is over the wheels.
