Team NMO's bots - Team NMO - Vic

I haven't posted in builders thread in a while and thought I'd go the same way as others with one thread for the team.

6x7 went very well at battleshed, won 3 of it's 6 fights placing it in the upper middle of the field at the end of the event. I'm very happy with it's performance.

Only 2 breakdowns to report.

-1- It blew a drill motor at the very end of one of the fights. Simple fix

-2- the cheap "A123" battery pack turns out to not be a A123 pack at all but a cheap knockoff, the links between the cells are completely inadiquet and had to be replaced after 2 failed. I think the cells will be ok now that they have decent links between them.

I'm going to keep 6x7 going but its time to think about a new bot as well, I think a drum bot would be good.

I've just placed an order for a scorpion xxl and a br6000 received to build the new bot so I can keep the old one running. Hopefully they will arive soon.

The idea for the new bot is one with a very small drum not bigger than a red bunnings wheel. so the bot will still handle ok in the arena.

Team NMO gave birth to a healthy 13.6 lb robot today named R.A.W. (Return to Active Weapons) . Parents are very happy and parents and baby are doing well.

Drum is 76mm diameter, 250mm long, powered by a 900rpm 18volt drill.

Armour is planned for 3mm - 5mm mild steel plate.

LOL, looks a bit preemie, but drum bots are always good Very Happy. Keep posting progress reports, I love seeing how other builders tackle drumbot challenges. BTW; what's the armour going to be?

so a question for everyone. when friction driving a drum the friction wheel will pull itself into the drum spinning in one direction and push itself away in the other.
so if I want the drum spinning up, should I hinge the weapon motor from the top or bottom?

it will be hinged at one end and sprung at the other.

I think I want to hinge at the top but its doing my head in a bit.

Raw took his first steps today, how they grow up so fast, AAAHHH.

He even bared his teeth, nice and sharp we hope.

He's weighing in at 9.5 - 10 kg's atm on the old analog bathroom scales and still needs some armour (3mm) and top cover. But he's ready for some testing at Danny's next weekend.

Event Report,

6x7 performed flawlessly, although the dodgey A123 pack is deffinately on the way out.

b&w did very well, although was let down by wheel hub slippage.

RAW did well in testing and weighed in at 11.1 KG's, need to redo bearing mounts, reinforce motor mounts, add gussets, change friction wheel mount slightly. other than that (which is a lot I know) I'm very happy so far

An Update.

I grabbed a xy table and a small milling bit. I've mounted it on the drill press and have made up some new bearing mounts out of UHMW (chopping board) for RAW. I know the bearings in the drill press wont hold up to milling steel or aluminium, but it should allow us to make small parts out of light materials.

I've ordered some T5 size timming pulleys and belts to mount the .46 size brushless outrunner on raw. That should give a speed up to 4000rpm on the drum but I can always slow it down with the speed controller.

My new battery arrived, so that fixes the dodgey battery problem.

Mat has also been busy working away at a possible new bot, that we may see soon.

That's cool, where did you find the XY table and how much did it set you back? I hope you didn't pay a premium for your T5 pulleys, I found a place in Perth selling the T10 for rapture at only $8 and $11 ea. Smile
