Cool, good start on a thread!
Just some things to point out:

The weapon motor - Those are seriously powerful outrunners, but you'll have to take great care in mounting it securely, glen has gone through at least 5 of those types, and one in orbit broke after the first hit! The inrunners have proven more reliable but only just.
However way you go about it, you'll need a larger reduction than that by far, fbs's still have a superior KE in general because of the sheer mass, I'd aim for at least 4:1 and if that doesn't burn out, try 3:1 later on...

What batteries are you planning on using? If you're going for A123,s you should get away with just 6 or 7 cells to run the lot. I don't actually think you can run packs like that (both series AND parallel), I might have mislead you on that one Embarassed

I'll be starting a new spinner thread very soon and doing a total costing on it (for my gf of all people lol), so it should be a good taste of what you're getting yourself into starting with a spinner. Smile Good luck!

as long as the motor doesnt cop any physical hits and isnt chain driven (nice v belt drive) itll be fine. its a solid motor. but definitely gear it as low as you can allow for.

a car rim is nearly 6kg or so for a little one and thats damn heavy, youll probably have to gear it for at least 1500rpm. i think that motor is 250kv or so 3.5 or 4:1 is good.

getting a car rim balanced at the speeds youd get at 1.5:1 would be nigh on impossible too

Badgers shell spinning faster than IG’s mower blade. Shocked

Yes I would agree on the 1500-rpm suggestion and some sort of bearing supporting the drive end of the outruner.

You can’t wire a pack in series and parallel at the same time.
There were series parallel switches on old trucks for starting but while in starting only the earthed battery supplied 12volts.

Tried the link but it didn't work... Try signing up to a free photobucket account, that way you can use the /img code to have pics direct in your build thread! Smile
Not sure which is more convenient but CBC www.conbear.com should have what you're after, but watch the prices! Some things just don't make sense (flanged 6mm ID bearing - $120.. sure). But they'll usually be able to help you out.

I would try for at least 6mm of clearance under the baseplate - it helps avoid getting stuck on debris during a match.

Interesting! The central tube is a good way to go; I am guessing the batteries are going inside the tube? Here's a thought: if you shift the electronics a bit, you could have the motors mounted direct to the tube and the base plate could be replaced with something very light, since it would not be taking any stress. 3mm aluminium would be more than enough, or even polycarb.

If you pull this off as a first bot, it will be most impressive!

Umm, where are the batteries? Laughing They fit into the tube, right?
I'm actually bloody impressed, that's hard to do ! Good luck with it!

they'll probably go into the tube with padding around them, just need to get the batteries to size them up!

should i have bearings running on the inside of the rim to help keep the shell from moving out of place?

also, apart from colsons, where can i get 6.5/7cm wheels?
thnx

try these guys.
http://www.robowars.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1175 they are in sydney.

71 dia 31 wide max sounds like it might do the job.

i think they can custom make other sizes if needed.
Quite a few of us run there 97mm spoked wheels. and people run there other sizes as well.

You only need bearings on the frame to support the shell if you think the shell, frame, or axle will flex so much that the shell and frame will touch. It looks like a very rigid set up, so unless the axle is too small and bends, I would say frame bearings are not required. If you think there could be problems, add some bumpers make from chopping board to the ends of the tubes to act as bearings.

I decided I like this design so much, I am copying the centre tube idea for an old FBS design I have on the back burner. Smile

its going back a while but i remember on one of big tims oldoldold robots he had some humungous bearing that had a huge flange with some m8 bolt holes or something in it. that would be perfect. the bearings where like 40mm diameter or something. might have been an air con bearing?

but yeah if you could mount it all on the box and eliminate the base it would be pretty good. just need something to stabilise it fowards and backwards. and stop it rocking about.

the box is a pretty good idea. phailbot copped some huge abuse and its still in one piece unbent and unscathed (not the shaft tho Laughing )
