Team Nexus - Locust

Long time since i started a build report. This project started at christmas and have been tinkering since. its a concept I have had for years so it was time to test it out.
dont expect too much but only to survive.
So far have only the drive system going. Next week will give it armour and hope there is enough weight for an actuator.

Drive is going to be GMC right angle drives which leads me to a question. probably to Gary regarding these drives.
The clutch sort of has a mind of its own, what sort of mods have been done to these units, so far I have extended the length of the pins to tighten it up, any other ideas?

Heres a pic of where its at, about 9 - 10 kilos.
http://www.robowars.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=1516

Its tracked but a bit unique in that there are no wheels to run on. works basicaslly like a chainsaw at over 1000 rpm.

Looks like a rather interesting little machine you've got there George.
Thought for a while you had given up on robots and moved onto just model tanks Very Happy

Waiting for paint to dry, finally stopped making changes and finalised the main body.
Still have to finish armour but everything will be bolted on from hear on.

Its a bit of a handful to control so playing with radio a bit, it has the least traction of all my tracked vehicles due to no suspension but on the grass its pretty awesome, which is no help in the arena but am getting close to catching the dog at least.

Have a question for Glen - what is the Gyro you are using, might need to look at one, do you recommend it? thanks

Futaba GY401, you can get them on ebay for $90 last time i bought one.

They work really good, only problems i had was the drivetrain had heaps of slack in it so the gyro doesnt work too well if thats the case. it just wobbles back and forth alot. if you can get the drive working so there isnt any backlash in it like the scooter drives then it should work awesome.

And you have to mount the gyro really really solidly so it doesnt move otherwise it throws the entire thing out of whack and the robot will start randomly turning when you dont want it to.

when those two probs are sorted out they're defo worth the money.

robot looks awesome too. ill have to chat with yah when im down there about tracks. looking at making some big versions to make a pocket half track like those kfz 251 things Smile

A lot of good comments on the Hobby City clone, Hobby King 401B AVCS Digital Head Lock Gyro . Not a single bad comment in the list (unusual for HC!). Tempted to order one myself for my next bot Smile

Cant tell if that Gyro can be switched off if inverted?

Could not wait for paint to dry anymore so I threw the frame in the oven for a while then dunked it in the sink to cool down.

Thought this was a good time for a pic.

Even though its small it still gives you lots of internal space for stuff. Could have been smaller.
Because the tracks are so heavy I had to build small and light but because the tracks are so heavy they didnt really require much as far as a frame, a piece of plastic is good enough it seems.

it has two signal wires in the servo lead in the picture (white yellow) so im pretty sure the cheapy one has the remote gain. worth a try i guess for $10. its always a gamble with the hk stuff tho

I have the mks 292 from HC and it seems reasonably good for the $20-odd it was. but yer once I sort out a solid mount for it then I'll be able to report on it. yer they can be turned 'off' but you just gotta turn the gain down on the remote.

Hi George, sorry to take so long to reply.

We gave up on the clutches and locked them up solid, Rob will post a picture.

Normal set screw trick combined with epoxy

Also they need washers under the little socate head screws retaining the big bearing.

Its going to be a round robin so if your tracks are vulnerable to spiners you can aford to forfit a few rounds.

Thanks for that.
Interesting that you epoxied the gear ring as well as added set screws.

I have extended the length of mine for an immediate better result but on occasion i hear the clutch or wonder how it dislodged its setting so might do the same and make it permanent. What where they thinking of using balls and rods together.

Not worried about fighting spinners, will armour up, my concerns all of a sudden are if I have enough battery packs for a round robin. Never been to one.

Do you need more battery packs in a round robin? probably

you would probably be fine with 2 packs as a minimum, just have one charging while you use the other.
