I think everyone at robowars saw how awesome the colsons are compared to other options available at the moment... redwheels are totally useless (not to mention the new version is unusable anyway) and banebots seem to expire after just a few matches...

Anyways, what size colsons would people like to have on hand locally?
The key sizes I think are 3" and 4", at 7/8" thickness, which is about 76 and 100mm dia, by 22 thickness. Thicker colsons are available with a different bore, but would probably suit ram bots better.

There is some localy available wheels similar to colsons, but I didnt get back a single reply from any of the suppliers. Evil or Very Mad

not being at robowars, i didnt get to see this up close. How are the colsons being coupled to a drill drive? Because that always seemed like the biggest problem

yeah the colsons in "the game" were press fitted to a hub done by Glen on his lathe.

Very easy job on a lathe, if you dont have a lathe maybe fork over a lil bit of $$$ for a place to spit some out for you

Ill grab some 3 1/2 diam by 1 1/4 thick wheels if ur doing an order or something

there the ones i used in the game and they worked lovely, nice size for any super skinny feathers (invertable) or if not there a nice size for mix of not stressing drills out and still having nice traction and speed.

for drill hubs youd be stupid to run anything wider then the 7/8" ones or youd be ripping apart gears. the game is probably the exception to that Smile

same goes for diameter. i think 3 or 4 inches is as big as you'd go on a drill although gary uses pretty big wheels on his robots. maybe the gmc drills are a bit stronger internally.

I like the 3" by 1.5" model - the wider wheels mostly have the same 1 - 3/16" bore and the hubs are dead easy to make, also pretty cheap.

Gary had a couple issues with those gearboxes I noticed during the event, bender can drive obscenely well with them though I must admit.
Just trying to find a generally useful size for everyone, the wider ones will definitely murder any drill gearbox, they're extremely grippy.

Hi guys,

Small Brazilian invasion here Wink Normally I pass by to read how things are going on Australia, but I decided to start participating here as well.

So, back to the topic. Since 2005 most Riobotz robots use Colsons, from 3" to 6":

Touro Jr and Tourinho (Drumbots - 12lb) - Colson 3" x 7/8"
Puminha (Wedge - 12lb) - Banebots 2-7/8" x 0.8" green or orange
Touro Feather (Drumbot - 30lb)- Colson 4" x 7/8"
Touro Light (Drumbot - 60lb)- Colson 5" x 1"
Titan2 (Bar spinner - 120lb) - Colson 4" x 1.5"
Touro (Drumbot - 120lb) - Colson 6" x 1.5" or 6" x 2", depending on the chassis.
Touro Maximus (Drumbot - 220lb)- Colson 6" x 2"

In these last 5 years we never had any problems with them, their grip is really good and they last a lot longer than the Banebots. A hub is easy to make using a lathe and a broach.

Regards,
Eduardo

How long do the Colsons usually last for you guys, Eduardo?

Philip,

It depends on the robot and the arena floor, but we managed to use the same pair of Colsons on Touro for 3 competitions, something like 15 fights. After that the wheels were still usable, but the grip wasn't the same.

One thing you can do improve the grip is to clean the rubber thread before the fights. We use anti-slippage spray or even WD40, just spray some on a cloth, rub onto the rubber surface and let it dry. This makes the grip really impressive!

I just moved to England and left Riobotz (for now), but in my solo design there is one thing I am sure, there will be Colsons.

Cheers,
Eduardo

The BB wheels are too soft already - you could try it, but my guess is that they will tear up even faster. They were a cheap solution, but everyone seems to be going off the BB wheels due to poor performance.

Agreed, they rip apart too fast normaly, let alone if you weaken the compound. Mad
