Yes I do agree with the inventiveness of unlimited class its a bit hard when you have to be able to deal with that much KE.

But as with any new classes its very hard to get off the ground until you get a big enough group of builders. Nothing against the hammer design but I think non-spinner get most things and allows for a bit more freedom though as you say you can end up with just flippers and rammers. Then we could go the same as the RFL hobby class or whateva it was and mandate an acitve weapon.

Just wondering; are we weighing the fuel in antweight flame-throwers? The tiny torch I found only takes a few grams, but its best to know before the bot goes over weight.

I think consumables don't count to the weight of the actual robot.

Btw nick I only use like 0.2g per fight. But a massive flame will use much more.

Aaron is right.

quote:
2.3 Consumables
Maximum weight includes all consumables.
FRA Build Rules I had thought consumables only counted in feathers and above.

Thanks, all I though that was the case, but the option to get a few extra grams was worth checking Smile

I don't care if you are 150 grams empty.

The event specific tech regulations from RFL do not cover this and I have been unable to find a copy of standard rule set since RFL went down. Anyone have a copy.

Otherwise I will have to make a decision on this before the Nationals event

Ooh, Steve! I am impressed! Smile

Seriously though, you are correct. Initially at least, people don't like the idea of their robot being smashed. So offering different types of competitions can only be good for the "sport".

We went to sportsman/non-spinner combat for regular events. There is newer threads which are more relevant.

I disagree. The majority of people I have spoken to (builders, audience, event organisers etc etc), it's the destruction and carnage that attracts everyone. What changes that is when they start building, competing and running events, then the carnage becomes less popular.

Builders start to run out of funds to keep rebuilding robots or shift to simple, less entertaining designs to "just stay in the game".
Competing gets less fun when it becomes a war of attrition (who has most spares/money). One hit and the fight is over.
Event Organizers struggle to keep the action going for the audience because half the robots are broken within the first few rounds.

In recent times, we have shifted to the Sportsman / Non Spinner events to keep people interested, fresh and creative, yet still keep the spinner events for our big Nationals event, which is all about who has the biggest, baddest robot, no bars held!

^ its a great format that. I'm enjoying the idea of having the best of both worlds.

Also, we did recently start playing with other weight classes that we hadnt previously done terribly much with. QLD went nuts with antweights, NSW did both beetles and ants. Where starting with a new weight class "from scratch", it kindof resets the whole arms race / pissing contest factor and they evolve all over again, which is fun to be a part of!

So I have been thinking about what sort of events we would like to have next year and I was thinking it might be worth doing a few straight sportsman antweights. What are peoples thoughts on this?

Would potentially open it up to noobs driving kitbots too.... Maybe they should be botbitz sponsored events to encourage those who are chasing out kits to come get involved?
