Sounds cool......does the up know if it has printed something....what would happen if it had printed an object then it got another message to print something else...would it crash into the previous print.....or does it just know these things he he?

While leaving the event on Sunday I bumped in Phil who gave me Steve's Reprap to use to print some bits. I plugged it in to my only remaining computer (Toshiba netbook) and tried to communicate with it. I am unable to connect with Pronterface or get a response from it through a terminal. Does anyone know what firmware is on it? Or should I just flash a fresh build to it?

Haha. Ok now we are talking.
My terminal doesn't go up to 250000. I thought that was a bit high for a FTDI chip.
Pronterface is connecting now but I will need to wait till after work to fire up the motors and get things level.

Good luck, that RepRap has found a short home in a fair few QLD sheds so far.

Well the first dry run went ok but the extruder is completely jammed and will have to be stripped down.

I am not sure if phillip gave you box of spares there is also a 1.75mm extruder too which might be easier to work with. And there is a makergear one somewhere. Be very careful with that stainless tube. Its really really thin. Also that is the most expensive extruder you can buy for reprap. And I still got the shits.

I cleaned it out and got it feeding. It needs a lot of calibration. I will need to remove some of the fibreglass insulation as it is getting in the way and also found a loose wire on the print head thermistor.
I did get my first print out of it but it isn't worth taking a picture of.

It's a reprap all you do is calibrate.
You don't actually get to print anything.

You will need a heat gun to get the bed to the right temp on the rep rap....it is a painful machine.....but you will need to do a lot of finger crossing as well he he

After having the heating resistor fail on the hot end I stripped it down and rebuilt it. I got a new resistor and mounted it tight with heat conductive paste which seemed to be missing from the old one. The thermistor is also mounted firmly and insulated now. I calibrated the PID values and the temp is holding much better.
With this all metal hot end getting PLA to feed needed some tricks. I have made a duct for the cooling fan onto the heat break to keep it cool as that was where all the jams occurred. Also rubbing the filament with a sponge soaked in cooking oil before feeding has completely stopped the jams.
Now that I can reliably print I just need to flip the Y axis adjust the steps/mm on all axis.

My hat goes off to you Andrew. Sounds like those mods would work well....I could never get the nozzle heat to work consistently and the bed warmed up sometimes then sometimes it would take ages even with a heat gun . When you can get it printing reliably i will be impressed. Very Happy

Cool I gave up on getting PLA to print with that nozzle and just used ABS. Good to hear that its working. Its a fun machine to play with and its pretty much got every upgrade that was current up to end of last year.

The thing which I really got sick of with it was that you were constantly tweaking it. And while it may be able to outstrip the UP in some aspects. The UP is a tool for me now not a project which is the big difference.

Once I fix the scale issue I will print the parts I need for my own and then pass it on to the next in line. It is a fairly simple machine compared to other "2D" printers I work on.
