jig used so we could flip over the motor mounts

machined the shaft down to 3mm first shot
now if only that was what I meant to do, its a slightly lose fit on the bearings but not too bad.

put the shell together, all looking pretty good
I might want to file down a few bits just a touch to make putting it together easier, if its not aligned perfectly straight it just won't go on.

possibly, the mill crapped itself the bearings are too crap to do steel now.
High res pictures at http://imgur.com/a/ccQ3N

Progress from yesterday.

Got the weapon motors cored out and glued onto their new mounts.

we put the lathe ring into the mill because cutting a square hole that deep is not easy at all, of course we realised this *after* we started lathing it.
it was only roughed out though so alignment wasn't critical.
Only snapped one cutter doing it too...oops.
The crappy bearing may well have been the cause it had some nasty harmonics.

well it fits (mostly) so job 1 done lol

fits with the bearings in it too.
Though we dun screwed up, the bearing ring size (ID) is the same as the bearing ring (od) so there is no clearence, also the lathe was chattering like a bitch so there is a mess of noise when it runs.
Also russell tested the bearing fit when everything was rather hot so when its cooled off the bearings are a bit of a tight fit in the ring. A bit of sanding should sort it out though.

I wouldn't worry about the bearing fit too much - the ring will heat up during matches.

So this is now officially the most far in advance of an event my bot has been ready, and also the longest after completion one of my bots has gone without damage.

Anyway to finish off the build report.
The extra friction was the bearings not the rubber ring.

The issue is the ring is too big to fit on anything in the lathe, this is the answer, reverse jaws on the 3 jaw chuck then on the outside of the teeth (the bit you aren't meant to use) grab the ring there, set the lathe to super duper slow and use a block of wood against the toolpost to get the ring close to true. (I took the weapon teeth off, but the holes where they key into the shaft to a dandy job of taking shavings off the wood block) then using a small hand file take off just a whisker, repeat 4x until the ring runs easily on the bearings.

After screwing around for the entire damn day its all together and running right.
I need to replace the fingertechs though or tune the radio better perhaps, they just don't seem to want to work evenly for drive.

See its all ready to go, even has a charged battery in it, just turn the screw and go.

There should be a penalty for being that organised, its just not natural! Do you have space for the small Banebots ESCs in there? they might be a better choice. I could lend you a set for testing if you are interested.

The banebots ones are reliable, but the trimming setup is completely stupid and they seem to just freeze if the reciever signal goes over 100% which is often with hobbyking radios. The botbitz 10a's look the goods tho.

Is that a boring bar in reverse to cut the groove? Nice idea that is Smile

I think that's what we did, that's not the picture of it though, we did that before it was cut off the billet. That setup is +-1mm, so only works when done by hand so you can follow it.

Russell made up a tool to get in the groove to sand the bottom of it too so its relativley smooth, the end result of the boring bar was super full of chatter.
