Hi all.

Hello Robowars!

My name is Andrew, I'm a CNC Machinist by day, wannabe .Net programmer by night.

I've always been interested in robotics, esp. the destructive kind, and have decided to dip my toes in the water.

I have access to 4 axis horizontal machining centres and lathes, all CNC, so that side of it won't be a problem for me. Somewhat of a newbie when it comes to electronics though.

I live in Beenleigh atm, although possibly moving to Beaudesert in the next few months and would love to get involved in a local group.

What sort of bots are being built in QLD? Don't want to make a featherweight if everyone is building ants for example.

Hi and welcome.

Ants and Featherweighs at the moment mostly. For the feathers at the moment we are leaning towards non-spinner too for local events. Due to costs and time or rebuild a robot ripped apart by all the high power spinners and shall be saving the spinners for the nationals event.

What you thinking.

I'm leaning towards featherweight class, but not sure what weapon to go for. I have an interest in building partially autonomous bots, using an IC programmable by C# I've found in my web trawls.

Just make something which moves first the autonomous stuff is usually a lot more difficult than it sounds and not generally that much fun. If you want to try feel free but would suggest you build something simple to start with.

Otherwise you will just get bogged down in the autonomous stuff and never build anything which actually works.

At the moment I have access to a Mazak QuickTurn 200MS, a Haas Super VF 2 with 4th axis, and a Sodick EDM with variable angle capability. But I have run in the past up to a Doosan Puma MX1600S with 2 spindles and 9 axis, bar feeder and parts catcher. I'm mainly proficient with Fanuc controllers, but I'm getting the swing of Mazatrol pretty quick.

Heh, there's more then just those two options Wink at the moment I work for a toolbox company, so lots of sheet work. Boss is also a pro drag racer so get some interesting stuff from time to time.

I've done in the past a lot of production work for the third party automotive accessory market in the past, as well as a fair bit of small run and prototype/design work. Everything from a reversed worm steering shaft replica from a VW Kombi for a Hot Rod, to wooden Violin necks for electric violins.

interesting,do you program manually,or use cad/cam?for the Violin necks I spose you would have had to use cad.
