Haha, pitchforks Smile

BTW im pretty sure the idea with the Sportsman class was not to use wearplate grade or exotic alloys like Hardox

The idea is you don't need to, that's just wasted weight. Smile

I don't have high hopes for those little gear motors! The gears in them are pretty tiny... will probably have to do that reduction onto bigger drive shafts. Smile

Also that winch motor seems pretty tiny? Relic from T2M? Razz

They might turn out to be a flop, but it will be a pretty good test for them. I just need them to last an event or two till I get the brushless drives in which have a much, much better gearbox on them! The winch motor is a T2M/RageQuit/MBX spare, I would like to use it unfortunately the end stage plates I picked up from Miles' winches, don't fit and I don't have any from the old days, so I've got to order a new style 2000lb winch tomorrow Sad The Hardox is going on so I won't have to fix a bashed up mild steel chassis at the end of the season and I can enter it straight into the spinner fest known as Nationals with less worries of it getting entirely raped Very Happy.

yah but it'll be lasercut from cheese grade mild, and it will likely require extensive finessing as I've not been proven to design robots with easy assembly in mind Razz did I ever mention how Hammerhead is actually about 10mm too narrow, causing the drives to butt into stuff?

Looking very interesting, especially the brushless drive

You mentioned BotBitz GMP42 14:1 gearboxes.
Cant find these on the website
Can you post a link?

Now that's a waste Razz You could just get that whole design done at OxyCut out of Bis and have the same weight, same cost but a chassis 11ty times stronger. Just because it's a sportsman doesn't mean you should make it weaker Wink

They are not an official BotBitz product currently because I've yet to source a motor for them or setup a configuration that doesn't burn out. If the brushless conversion works out as planned, I might discuss with Steve on selling a conversion kit. This post - http://robowars.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=75178#75178 - and the following 3 pages has some information on the setups.

ah cool....yeah i guess hardox is a good idea especially as we cant do wedge shapes to deflect spinners (at other events).....go the pitch fork.....that will look genius and love the name to Very Happy

Aaron: Sure, but I'd like to be able to drill holes in it and weld it with my shitty arc welder without it exploding apart

Gearboxes able to take 775 or equivalents definitely are interesting
The thought of a brushless drive appeals - I fancy trying something new

Will be watching with interest

Well after some thinking, it was going to require a fair bit of effort to get the GMP36's to work without failure, so I might as well go brushless Razz

My first rough "what is needed to make it work" proto at the bottom and the some what close to finished final.

Quick exploded view, very simple little adapter for this motor and gearbox.

I'm going to consider a slightly modified design that could be put into production for BotBitz, but we'll see how this setup goes first Smile

Pity it's outrunners, now the German raptor class allows 3650 brushless inrunners....

The raptor class has rulings on what motors you can use for drives? Rolling Eyes

Outrunners are just a much better motor for this kind of situation. The KV of the motor is in a sensible region where you don't need triple staged gearboxes to get a good output RPM and they have a much nicer start up when used with sensorless controllers.

Sounds like the Germans run some silly rules if they only allow 3650 inrunners.... Plenty of nice, cheap and range of variants of inrunner and outrunners in the 36mm category, selecting a single size for the ruleset is rofl-worthy.
