one question, isnt a hobbyweight meant to be half the weight of a featherweight? like 13.6/2 = 6.8kg?

but back on topic, kang, has gotten a new owner, my mum Very Happy ive had enough of her whinging about how cobra takes up too much room and shes had enough of my non stop robotic nagging so now the competition is on Twisted Evil

its the same old thing with two 12v drills at 24v with 2 drill packs inside it, with 4mm steel armour clad all over it, with a 10mm thick steel wedge on one side and a steel curved scoop on the other end. all powered by a pair of home made switch controllers.

the weapon? well who knows. lets just see where it goes Very Happy

the mother will be the commander of this machine, at the moment shes taken kang and straightened all the edges out on the bench grinder and weve both finished the hose clamp mounts. (how do you vics get by with them? they suck lol)

ive got to finish off the second pack tommorow and then ill chase down 20 more cells for another 2 packs.

at the moment its all resting on a 1mm steel base, thats going to get a 4mm steel one thats a tad bigger in a few days. itll be fun Very Happy

well my mum just dumped a multi ribbed belt and a single pulley in my lap today after our magnas air conditioner and compressor clagged.

so now were trying to think of something we can use it in. i was going to have it in a nar kart but i cant think of any suitable motor. its very long so where thinking of having the actuator on one side of the bot and the actual weapon on the other.

the fan motor finally got some loving attention from the dremel and bench grinder today as well. the shaft is hacked to death so im trying to get it all round again. its down to about 4-5mm and with my new drill press vice ill be able to drop that 2mm steel pin through the shaft (and pulley).

i mounted the reciever box as well and also the rx batteries. the switch is just cobras old jaycar switch and that should go in tommorow along with me starting the switch controllers. the type that where in aurora where fantastic in being really effective, but they where so space consuming.

the battery mounts are a nice little innovation. there going to be a piece of 3mm ali flat bent into an inverted L shape. then there will be a piano hinge at the base of this inverted L. then on the other side will be one piece of threaded rod and a wing nut. this only needs to be done up for battle as the batteries are really held in tight with the riveted L bracket mounts.

in summary this bot is really turning out to be a great little thing. it is absolutely tiny at 250x250mm and the height should be less than 90mm. its also ridiculously easy to work on. the batteries slide in with no effort, are held in real tight and the switches can be turned on and off with no obstruction. so despite its tiny size its much easier to work on than cobra.

all that needs to be done is to take the belt, the fan motor and turn it into something useful.

No, given that we adopted the U.S. Standards, the "hobbyweight" class is 12lb, which is less than half the 30lb featherweight class.. one of the discontinuities in the system.. once you start getting down that light, people start wanting finer and finer graduations, hence the ant, superant, beetle, soz and so on..

personally, once you get any smaller than feathers, I think you're starting to get too close to a radio controlled toy car for my liking.

played around with a weapon for it today, its going to be a big ass 230mm saw blade essentially dragging on the floor mad dog style.

i tried to drill a hole in the shaft for an m3 bolt to pass through and hold the boss onto the weapon shaft. i spun up a light piece of 1kg steel when it was all done (went up to speed pretty quick on 24v) before the whole thing started to shake and the bolt then snapped after the motor went for a nice roll around the floor (far to misaligned boss, i had to drill it in a real awkward way as i couldnt fit it in the drill press vice properly).

i then redid it with a bigger 5mm solid steel pin and it stopped vibrating and seemed real strong, however when i tried to hammer the pin in the second time, i snapped the shaft right in half! do'eth!!

so i guess ill just need to find either A) a far bigger motor with at least a 10mm thick shaft for the pin to go through, or B) find one of the flat plate motors.

the frame design is coming along nicely, it should be all made of bolted together 3mm steel, and 10mm lexan on the tops and for little structural pieces, looks very artistic i feel, and i should have a cad of it up by sunday time when i get every panel at a rounded off measurement and every angle at either 45 degrees or 90 degrees (you can sometimes forget this in a CAD model).

ermm oh yes. and the 2x SLAs should be for the drive and the 2x drill nicads on the weapon. if weight is a bitch ill just chuck 1kg out of it in the form of one SLA[/quote]

did more work on this one due to the absence of my real robot.

im going to use cobras old aluminium frame for its framing and a whopping piece of 6mm steel on the wedge thats bolted onto the back, and spring loaded.

the front im not sure about in regards to design but i think itll just angle in like the first basilisk and then ill use two big forks out the front of that.

well it seems as though kang has ballooned way overweight, to like 15kg, so its a fresh new start me thinks.

heres what i did look like with all the steel and aluminium framing:

http://robowars.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=450
http://robowars.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=451

its incredibly strong though, even with it just resting there i can jump up and down on it and cant feel any movement, like bending. unfortunately...
way way to heavy, and im not willing to forgo all that armour with plan b and basilisk around. so its some smarter designing in order.

im thinking now about just ditching the whole saw motor and saw thing, and just getting a big hulking piece of steel pipe, hacking it in half and using it as a thwackbot with some of those 200w motors, but ill play around with it some more, soo much spare time

or coneversly ill just use the biggest saw motor i can and make the rest of it tiny

well i got kang a little more built today, i bolted the wedge onto the back end and mounted the box section onto the base which is the basis of the drive mounts.

im still racking my brain over what to do with the front of the robot, i cant think of a good design for it, as i cant have a flat plate across the front or else the motor will stick out... so im thinking of making a skeleton out of some 12x12 box section..

but anyway i also got my 12v nicad stick packs made. i couldnt get ahold of any 40mm pipe so instead i just gaffa electrical taped each end of the pack and have layed all 4 packs inside a plastic jiffy box. theyll all stay in there and ill just charge them all at 12v with the drive dont care if they die much. there only drill cells.

the setup will be two drill nicads in series for the weapon and two drill packs in parrallel for the drive

will be ready for next years season if any new guys want to drive it, or else ill just hand the controls over to demon woman LOL Very Happy

get yoru mum down to have a gto or your dad. they have always been giving in fod and time and running stuff back and forth between your place and jeffs. wouldnt mind versing mrs rose with my spare parts bot or orbit with what i ma hoping its interchagable lifter dealy (dont want to hurt it too much first go of course).

ill build a fun robot but my parents wont want to hang around all day for it though.

hmmm.

get pics up whenever possible.

heh dont want to hurt it to much, all steel boy-o, you cant hurt it!

but can any one finish this picture?

http://robowars.org/forum/album_pic.php?pic_id=450

how should i finish the front, the base will taper in towards the motor and the saw will hang underneath the base itself, apart from that i have no idea what to do..

Hey Glen, have an idea for you.
Looked at your pic for a while and opinion is whatever you do should be focused on defence.
Idea is to use a semicircle shape (Like half a tyre with a height matching your width) and run this round the front covering your whole front end.
Position it so theres about an inch air at the front between the motor and the armour. Hope that makes sense.

Idea is that you end up with a front you can charge into other saws and spinners with to slow them down. Then having a rounded shape on your front means when pushing you can roll your robot into a position to cut their wheels with.
Idea suits rubber like a tyre as it can take a whack from a spinner easier and gives you some grip and shock absorption but the round shape can give you some interesting moves and give you better stability when cutting.
Just a thought anyway, if you dont like the idea then
u know what u can do lol

score! your an ideas man george, Cool (p.s. cant believe i forgot your hot dog and coke Crying or Very sad i feel like such a toss bag, IOU 3x hot dogs and cokes at the annihilator)

that tyre idea sounds damn good, after seeing tread in action, and that whole bouncy, shock style attack is just so damn cool. now to plunder a tyre...

well i got a nice little item today,

i was looking for a 16" tyre to bolt on the front, but i think replacing the weapon with this hulk of a thing will do far better Very Happy

basically a 76mm diameter tube, 1.4kg in weight and its about 14mm thick aluminium. i dont think itll bend or break anytime soon.

the plan is to run the bot of 3x drill packs at 12v and just use a series wound motor to power the drum. stainless steel shaft for the drum to run on and im thinking about using two blocks of *15mm thick K1045 tool steel* on the front, bwuhahahhahaaahahhaha

p.s. mwuhahahahha
