Sportsman Summary

So here is the sportsman rules
http://sparc.tools/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2016/10/SPARC_Robot_Construction_Specifications_v1.1.pdf

I thought I would do up a summary of the major differences from standard class.

1 - Mandatory active weapon
2 - No Spinners (Sort of) OK if 400rpm or less (unmodified saw blades < 250mm also allowed)
3 - No Wedges

Thats pretty much it.

Spatulas are allowed on the front of weapons to let them be effective.

Thats about it.

Enjoy.

Is the minimum ground clearance 1/4" all around in this class?

I am interested in building a compliant sportsman feather. I don't think any of our robots would comply with the rules. I just read:

"No wedges
Sides of a bot within 1 inch of the floor must be perpendicular to the floor."

Apparently, flat plates that protrude from the front of your robot are only allowed to be on lifters, flippers and grabbers. These must also contain a minimum of a 1 inch vertical side as I understand the rules. http://www.nerc.us/

Yeah i think most abided by that somewhat. Perhaps not one inch but i don't believe any had wedge shaped sides that came down to the ground except for lifters/flippers and they were all within the width rules (i think its 1/4 width of the robot or some such)

I am looking at redesigning my clamper lifter, Aussie Battler, to comply with the rules. I need to make the front have a 1" perpendicular side and reduce the lifter to 1/4 of the width. I can't see how it would work if the lifter has to contain a 1" perpendicular step in it. There is a sentence that allows wedges bellow an inch but it is discretionary.

"A weapon which requires a small slope below 1 inch or a small plate that is flat to the floor in order to function will be allowed at the discretion of the officials.

Example: A lifter, flipper, or clamping weapon."

Would a continuous slope on a lifter >1/4 of the width of the robot comply with the spirit of the rules? Are the stabilisers that many lifters use within the rules?

That all sounds fine. Really as long as you aren't trying to make a wedge with a token weapon you will be ok.

Are spinners restricted to any width? Lifters are limited to 1/4 of their width. Is that ratio similar with spinners or could a drum be the full width of the robot?

That web site is off-line, however the NERC site mentions spinners are limited to 400 RPM, with no mention of SFM. I worked out the SFM on Scissorhands bar and it came to around 90 RPM - with that limitation, we might as well say "no spinners allowed" as at that sort of speed they are totally ineffective.

With spatulas on the ends of flipper arms, is there any limit to their length past the edge of the bot's frame?

Look at the SPARC rules for current ruleset we are using.

Don't believe so, as long as it abides by the width rule and the surrounding bodywork is vertical as per the rules it should be fine.

OK, the SPARC rules (para 4.2.3) also say 400 RPM. I am thinking about retiring Scissorhands to the sportsman class and fitting a brushless motor and an extra gearbox to get the speed down. Would that be allowed?

No, it breaks rule 4.2.1

Really this isn't what the sportsman class is about.

quote:

The intent of the Sportsman Class is to encourage novel designs and driving ability. The focus of this class is fun and creativity, not the annihilation of your opponent. Robots must comply with both the letter and spirit of these rules to qualify for this class.

At the moment technically yes it is within the sparc rules. However I am wondering if the SFM is a better way to do it otherwise I see 2m 400RPM spinning bars becoming a problem.

Also the second half of 4.2.3

quote:
To remain within the spirit of this class, you should not attempt to create the most destructive spinning weapon possible under the rpm limit.
