My first.

Im new here and I and looking to create a Beetle Weight or Feather Weight.

Im looking at a 3S system with drill motors.
Is a spinner is an effective weapon?
I need cheap speed controllers.
Any suggestions on tires?

Thanks.

Hi and welcome. If you are anywhere near Ipswich, come along to the event today and have a look and a chat.

NSW has a lot of beetle weights, but there aren't so many in QLD. Feathers are in both states. That having been said, lighter robots are cheaper than heavier robots. You will find that a beetle will fit into your tight budget better than a feather. You could build an ant if you are in QLD.

After you decide on your weight class, we can give you more information on parts. I would avoid the car ESC. They generally have a delay between forwards and reverse. I use this Tx . Get the programing cable as well so you can program mixing into the radio. That way you don't need a separate mixer.

Considering I live in QLD, I will probably go with FeatherWeight.

I was at the event yesterday too, but I got there a bit late and only saw rounds 4 and 5. I plan to go today as well.

I think I have the base design for now.

I havent pinned down the details yet, but a 10cm high box should go well with 12cm wheels. If I put the spinner through the middle of the box, it should be able to attack from either side. The wheels would protrude from top and bottom so flipping isn't an issue.

I have most of the materials I need to build the frame here. I just need drills and to purchase the cart I have from hobbyking.

Has anyone used tank style treads before?

Are you thinking of something like Judge Mental ? (second post on the page) It is good to check the motors and batteries that other people have used with a similar design.

Tank treads are generally heavy and more prone to coming off than wheels. They are cool though.

Your idea of being invertible is good.

If you post your proposed weapon motor, ESC and battery size builders with spinner experience will be able to give you advice.

ZIPPY Flightmax 4000mAh 4S 20C

Something like judgemental but with the blade extending partially inside the case.

Cool. A couple of observations. The ESC is a 30 A, but the motor says it is 3s maximum and needs a 45 A ESC. Spinners can have their blades flex and hit themselves.

QLD is going to have more sportsman events than open events. The spinner would only get limited fights in the year.

Ill try to get a ESC for it then, thanks.

Blade flex should not be much of an issue with 3cm of clearance each side.

What is this sportsman class?

Heya mate, welcome! I'll see if I can help you get started. Smile

Sportsman class means no spinners, so they're really easy to get into and a lot of fun (less chance of your robot getting totally trashed). We recently did a big sportsman event in Sydney, check out this great finals fight: http://youtu.be/0RdOmm1y-gU

For your first ever robot, a simple moving platform is a great starting point. I did a whole series of videos on how to get a robot platform working and moving for about $200 total cost.

You need:
2 x Kmart 12V cordless drills ($20 ea).
2 x Botbitz 85A escs (or Botbitz 30A escs if you can't afford them) http://www.botbitz.com/index.php?route=product/product&path=59&product_id=59
1 x Radio, the HK6 is a great starter radio, just make sure you grab the program cable with it! http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__16255__Hobby_King_2_4Ghz_6Ch_Tx_Rx_V2_Mode_1_AUS_Warehouse_.html
1 x Battery and charger, up to you anything around 2000-3000mah and 4S (4 cell 14.4v) will do.

Few other little things, as specified in the tutorial vids.

Have a watch and let me know if you need any help. Smile good luck!

I was just going to purchase 5 or so old drills from the logan recycling market for $2 each. I was going to get the 30A ESCs from hobby king and reprogramming them.

I was already looking at that transmitter and the battery I am looking at is 4Ah, I may change it though.
