True, I was mightily pissed off when I heard about that price drop. Having open and brand independent control software is still a big step forward - inkjet printers wouldn't be where they are today without a seamless driver to applications and while I am not getting my hopes up for a quick improvement, Autodesk might be the first sign of bringing 3d printing to the non-technical masses.
If that follows the inkjet pricing model, we will be paying $100 for the 3D printer and $1000 for a roll of filament _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

at least one printer manufacturer is making chipped reels of filament, so you have to use authorised filament and can't refill etc.
There are hacks around it but still. _________________ Mechanical engineers build weapons, civil engineers build targets

I came across this 3D printing software called Simplify3D
http://www.simplify3d.com/
, which replaces the various freebie software that rep rap printer users normally have to use. It seems to offer at least some of the benefits that UP printer users enjoy - has anyone heard of it before? There are some positive reviews but its hard to judge if its worth $140 _________________ Australian 2015 Featherweight champion

It really depends on what printer you end up with, but if you can use it, give CURA a go, the slicing speeds on that are 'insane' we run 15hr + builds through our mankati and it slices them in seconds. It also has a really neat 'print one at a time' mode if the bed is big enough and the heads have enough clearance, which speeds printing times up and part quality.
I haven't looked much into simplify3D as none of our machines will work with it, but seems pretty polished. I've used KISSlicer before, which is powerful but sooo confusing.
EDIT: Have you gotten your machine moving yet nick ? _________________ ( •_•)

Ey guys, just wanted to do some shameless link whoring - I've been trying to be more active on youtube with my Maker's Muse page - aim is to do lots of tutes because there's very little info out there on the 'finer workings' of desk top 3D Printers and 3D Software.

great to see some serious hits happening on your vids...Cool I'm watching you mesh mixer tutorial now…..the plane cut looks epic for cutting off a puppets face for doing replacement stop-mo faces…genius
Angus...one thing that I'm sure it can do, but thought you might know... is will it let you use the plane tool to cut off a puppet face then ……extrude keys out of the back go the face to lock into inverted keys on the head?…so you could resculpt the face part so you could have multiple expressions that all fit the same back head bit? _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts

Hey dude, you probably can by using the boolean union and difference tool after slicing, but it's not always that great. Worth a shot though! You could probably use tinkercad too. _________________ ( •_•)
I've done it successfully with STL meshes in Rhino using the Mesh boolean split tool, using a plane surface as the spiltting tool _________________ <Patrician|Away> what does your robot do, sam

What size parts? I would say up mini for under 120mm cube and flash forge dreamer for 230 x 150 x 150 build volume. Any larger and you wont get reliable abs prints without spending mega bucks _________________ ( •_•)

We needed accuracy for a prop puppet head for a short film we just worked on. We scanned the original sculpture with 123d catch on the iPhone…then that spat out a obj file which we through into mesh mixer …where we cleaned it up and resized it and resculpted details that needed t be enhanced. Than because it was to big for our mini up….used the plane cut tool to slice int in half …exported an stl…..then printed the two parts and glued them together with liquid abs…..omg i could not believe how accurate the slice was from mesh mixer….the halves joined together seamlessly….we are sold, and are doing this for everything in future.
If the UP made a 200 x200 that would be epic….but until then we are just going to slice things to 120mm and join the pieces. _________________ Miles Blow - Julie Pitts
