Potential New Builder

Hi everyone, my names Matt, I moved over Sydney from New Zealand at the start of the year to my PhD in Electronics/Wireless Communications at USyd.

Pretty stoked when I discovered this was a thing over here! Pretty keen to get involved, any recommendations on what might be the best way to do this ? I would like to see some of the bots in actions before a crack into my own.

Thanks in advance,
- Matt

Best opportunity will be to compete in Nationals in Brisbane this year.

Some of the local builders might be able to catch up with you and help you knock something up quickly and pass on some more info.

My advice would be to just give it a go and go from there.

If you want to drop by Gladesville, I would be happy to show you a couple of bots and talk about designs. Just PM me if you are interested.

build something basic and strong just to figure out how they work, compete this year then build your monster of destruction next year.

Welcome!

A good start would be to build a basic platform, like Wolfe said. Not to toot my own horn, but I did this tute series last year, should be handy!

Welcome Matt!

Like they said, start basic, don't be too ambitious with your first designs. Try to convince as many people as you know to get on board! We could really use some new blood to kickstart things in NSW again as those pesky QLD'ers are hogging all the fun.

Did that sound desperate? Smile

Also take Nick up on his offer, his workshop is like some sort of fairytale wonderland of heavy metal machinery and his robots are world class (literally). Plus I can vouch for him not being TOO creepy Wink

Hi Everyone

Hi everyone,

Thank you all for the warm welcome and sorry for the delay, thought I had email reply notifications but i guess not !

Starting simple is always a good plan, I have a strong electronics/robotics engineering background so I have plenty of ideas i'd love to try out in that regard.

I mainly need to get an idea of the mechanical designs, more specifically what would be over-kill and at the other end, what would get torn to pieces in the arena. I think I will take you up on your offer too nick. It is much appreciated, thanks everyone!
