Here is a photo of the current xu1 drill and gearbox -

Notice at the chuck end of the gearbox there is a black spring, that is holding cylindrical bearings in, with the chuck twisted all the way down the spring pushes down on the bearings and locks the clutch. When you remove the bearings that is where the grub screws go in to lock the clutch for combat.

Also the whole gearbox is basically round so no matter how well you make your mounts the motor can still spin inside the mount. That is my experience at least.

Here is what you want, note where the spring was, the plastic underneath is an oval shape with a flat top and bottom. Ideal for a solid mount and due to it's square/rectangular shape stops the motor from physically spinning inside the mount.

I picked up these today http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/18V-Ni-cad-Cordless-Drill.aspx?pid=342597#Cross they are "on sale" till the 6th of September

A mounted gearbox

It's not that the xu1's are no good the motors are probably fine, it's just a mounting issue at the gearbox end.....

Good luck and here's what the box looks like lol Very Happy mite make them easier to find.

Also you may notice in the drill hacking tut http://www.robowars.org/wikka/DrillHacking101 the xu1's they use have that square end, the one's I opened up today did not, hence the Rockwell's 18volt jobbies I hope they do the trick.

For the XU1 if your using 3D Printed mounts you could probably make a new design so that the bolts go through those mounting hoels on the drill gearbox then there would be no chance of it slipping.

I need some 18v motors so i'll pop down to kmart this week and see what the state of the nation there is Smile They used to have isles of them.

If you are just using a block with a hole bored in it as a mount you could probably drill a pair of holes sideways through it with a grub screw or two pressing on the flats to stop it rotating.

Those supercheap ones are good! The 4 screw mounting types are the best of the crop imho. Some of the kmart ones are like that too.

How did you not use those mounting holes on the XU1 gearboxes to stop it rotating? All you had to do was put a bolt through one of them Smile

I did think too and tried, however made a mess of my first mount lol attempted using only a saw horse and drill, went for a press fit with a rubber O ring instead did work sort of, but unless really tightened up which put too much pressure on the gearbox it *could and did spin the motor few times.

learning curve , I like the *square end gearbox for a secure mount/fit zero spin.

Very Happy

Just grabbed a couple of $22. 12v kmart drills, so they definitely still exist. Were the old style with the square gearbox end. They also had 18v for $35. They were restocking while I was there so kmart is once again the place to go Smile

Woohoo! Riverlink kmart had tons of 12 and 18v ones. I grabbed 15kg worth for the trip home Very Happy

They seem different outwardly, with an LED light and a blanking switch type item on top possibly where a 2 speed selector would go.

Good to see you are making good use of an interstate airline flight. Price is decent. Hopefully they last better then the Miles and Jules experiment on Kmart drills

Think one of the keys is dont go about 4S on drills because even though they had 18V ones I bet they were just 12V with a different battery.

Indeed.

Got these off ebay and they were junk so really i just need the motors off the drills - http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/331220864960?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649

Though my aluminium case ones seem to have worked perfectly so perhaps it was just the gearbox flexing that is the main cause of failure (after gears and pins breaking is fixed).

Need to try find the DSE 900rpm drills that demons using again. Harbour freight has them and will apparently ship here if you email them. But eh.. probably not worth the trouble. Though the reduced gearbox ratio could be another reason for the reliability..

We've tested them actually and they are different to the 12v kind.

Stalling them on a power supply they draw a very different amount of power. 12v is 10 amps at 1v or and the 18v are 4.5v at 10 amps from memory. Not a definitive test by any measure but they would appear to be wound different.
