Are pneumatic flippers allowed in the original sportsman rules? Unless they are low pressure I'd imagine a full arena would be needed in case of parts or complete bots are thrown out of the arena. I agree though it would be good for the sport if we had more flippers - I am very keen to see Glen's contribution.

I am keen to start on an arena; we just need somewhere to run regular events...

I think I've only posted in 2-3 times in the last week that I can run events at my place at Seven Hills and keen to start my own arena shortly Razz

Sure, but wasn't your arena going to be just for sportsman events?

If you have enough room to throw down a few sleepers then Set a date and lets do this :>

I didnt see any rules regarding high pressure flippers other than abiding by the wedge rules but yes full pressure would be out of the question for unenclosed arenas imho

Yep naked turtle worked really well as a low pressure flipper and was hard to beat. Very Happy

Initially for sportsmens, as I'm just going to do most of the panels with plywood then replace them with polycarb as I can afford it. Until the walls and roof are all running suitable polycarb, I'm not keen on running spinners of any capacity purely based on safety reasons.

WRT the 2014 QLD events, they were 'non spinner' events, not sportsmens.

I'm not keen on doing events at Jeff's purely because I feel it's rude to just turn up to use the facilities at his house when he hasn't been interested/involved in robots for a very long time and especially when I don't believe anyone has a regular relationship with Jeff other then randomly wanting to use the arena.

If we need to disassemble the arena, dispose of it and give Jeff his garage back, then I believe that is the polite thing to do. I quick call to Sims metal will handle most of the disposal, and the polycarb can be salvaged / repurposed as the NSWFRC sees fit. Smile

I'm not sure that Sims would want the floor panels - they are 1mm steel wrapped around a concrete core so probably more trouble than its worth for them. OTOH, the supports could be dumped for free anywhere as tips always accept metal without charge. If we 'forgot' to mention the floor panels were not all metal we could probably dump those for free as well. That just leaves the wood and that heavy conveyor belt.

Could always look at a skip bin for the day. They seem to be flat rate on prices regardless of materials being disposed.

I'm happy for full fat beetle events at my place, I just suck at setting a date and sticking to it, an EO I am not.

If you do run open air events then mandate safety glasses for everybody attending when matches are on.

Sif dissasemble a robot!

Okay so looks like we have options, what we need is some sort of club president to make a decision on what we do

If we are really going to transition away from Jeffs then I suggest the polycarb gets reused to make an arena at Aaron's place

meanwhile sportsmans, get on that, Nick even your worst mockup robot is probably going to be the most overengineered sportsman ever Smile

I saw a video of two sportsman robots that were both within the rules but combined they made a dangerous situation in just a barricaded arena. It was a flipper and a chainsaw bot - the flipper threw the saw onto the tyre barricades. It could have ended badly. Must be careful of combinations like that.

What about standing behind a polycarbonate "Blast Shield" a la Mythbusters and doing it in a car park or a basement?

That's not a bad idea! Our old & off-limits arena is a 2 car garage with the front covered in polycarb and its large enough that everyone gets a view. Perhaps we can start off a full arena with just one wall and no roof? that should cover any sportsman issues.
