Team 1.21 Jigowatts - Ant Weights - SA
Tuesday I received my first shipment of parts from Hobby King
So I got straight to work.
I quickly realized that not only was HK out of stock for the mixing cable for my Transmitter but my ESCs are still on their way.
Not discouraged I dug through my boxes of parts and found an old Arduino Mini and a H-Bridge chip and realized I could do mixing and speed control on board
While writing the code for the mini I printed up a simple wedge shell and ended up with this messy test rig on my desk
A little neatening up and a bunch of tape later it could move on its own:
(by dragging its brains along the ground )
Even though its a test rig full of excess wiring and a breadboard it still manages to come in under weight!
Now its time to neaten it up, create a small circuit board, re-print the body and add a weapon before my first fight on the 16th!

Nah, just leave it as is, I'm sure it'll do fine in the arena ..
Seriously though I'm glad it's coming along so well, can't wait to see it / face it on the 16th. I'll bring my Hobbyking cable and my laptop along then anyway in case you do end up needing to reprogram it.

HAHA! yeah definitely cant see that ending badly
And thanks! I might need it because I want to try and get the switches on the controller working

great way to problem solve! and i have the same scales _________________ Creative Instigation - Build Something Awesome!

It has a motor controller built on board, Marto wrote code years ago to make it function as a speed controller and it's been well proven (I ran them for ages in my antweights). It also has plenty of memory for any autonomous functions and sensors you want to run
I ended up saving a lot of space/weight in Scarlet my removing the pin headers off the RX and soldering fine ribbon cable from the pads on the RX to the B328

Thanks!
The Pololu looks interesting, I really only started down the micro controller path because of a lack of parts (for this build at least) but its something I want to keep up with.
Removing the RX from the plastic and removing the headers sounds like a great way to save weight, which will really help with the weapon I have in mind

How's progress going so far? Your bot looks excellent from the early photos you've put up!
I'm looking forward to seeing it complete.

Quick update from the weekend,
Electronics have been stripped down, and a new base plate has been printed:
The pic does not show my arduino but that will only add an extra 7 grams or so.
Which means I have lots of weight left for a weapon!
Also the small brown board is enough to power all 3 motors which will be added to the bot in the coming week!
Also kind of need to re-solder the antenna on to my RX.... whoops

You should be fine without the antenna. I haven't had an antenna on my Rx for years. _________________ So even the rain that falls isn't actually going to fill our dams and our river systems

A few revisions is good for a robot, right?
Thankfully my printer is up to the task

After a weeks worth of work, printing and reprinting,
Introducing: Make Like a Tree
Its my very own take on a body spinner, Originally the weapon was going to be 6mm aluminium and be slightly smaller, but I couldnt get it cut in time, so for this weekend only acrylic is the way to go.
Its 90% 3D printed with a 45g weapon ring, I still have a little work to do, to fit the electronics but it will be up and running for the fight on saturday
It may have been a bit ambitious as a first bot but it was good fun

Will give you a warning, the acrylic ring will more then likely break on the first hit. _________________ https://www.halfdonethings.com/

Thanks for the heads up.
It is something I am prepared for, I have a number of rings cut and I am basically hoping to do enough damage before the ring breaks, then swap rings between fights.
As above it will be upgraded to Aluminium when I get a chance to get some cut.
Also this design is completely untested so I am sure that weapon rings shattering is only going to be one of my problems, oh well... run it till it breaks then improve it!

Cool, a ring spinner! Are you running a brushed or a brushless weapon motor?
