just wondering

what would be good for armor plating i was thinking ali but i'v been reading people are using ti for plateing but i'v found it is a little expencive.

also would a wind screen washer moter be good for a spinner drive?

also (again Rolling Eyes ) are drill moters good for wheel drives ?

also any hint would be great

Okay, I don't mean to be grouchy at you Al, but most of your questions have already been answered in existing threads. Please check threads before creating new ones.

Okay. Here were go:

Armour materials are a pickle in a half. for your first robot, Aluminium will be easy to work with, and will provide a good learning experince.

Windscreen Wiper Motors are very slow with the gearbox on, for a spinner, you would be better off with a fan motor from a car.

Drill motors are in 95% of the robots in Australia. They are cheap to get, cheap to replace and do a mighty job for the price.

I don't mind helping at all, just sometimes, it gets a little annoying when the answers are in active threads and newbies just dive in head first creating threads with out looking Wink

My first finished robot, Spiny Tiger, was made entirely out of wood Very Happy
Although I am embarrassed saying that I built it I look back on it and can honestly say that it gave me the confidence to keep going.
the lesson learnt here is you can compete on a budget!!!

amen to that chris, i cant say my first 3 attempts where really any better. even worse actually.

the idea is to get building and teach yourself. i just dont think you can be told somethings. example, you cant tell someone how to weld on a forum and expect them to do a perfect weld first time off.

LOL yeah chris i know exactaly what you meen and glen i think mine was the worst by far on crappy firsts. take the prototype for ts it was timber base and a back panel with a spike out the back and no side or wedge LOL Embarassed but then again it never fought in any battle but a hint either way try and keep it aslow in hight as possible because you can have timber armor and be realy effective but the bots with their spinny bars and their kinetic weopons are generally up high so if you keep it low you can still compeet against em plan b is probably the only exception to this rule in australia

Just wondering

is this right?

if my motor is 6000 rpm and my gear ratio is 10-1 and my wheel is 10inches do i get 28.4 kph?

step 1 - 6000 revolutions per minute * 60 minutes per hour = 360,000 revolutions per hour.

Step 2 - Divide Motor Rpm / Gear Ratio (10:1 = /10) = 36,000 wheel revs per hour

step 3 - 10 inches wheel diamter = 25.4 cm wheel diameter
(please keep units constant, dont work with tyre diameter in inches (imperial) but ask for speed in metric (kilometers)

step 4 - 25.4cm diameter * Pi (3.1415) = 79.79cm circumference (Circ = Pi *D)

Step 5 - 36,000 revolutions per hour * 79.79cm circumference = 2,872,440 cenitmeters per hour

Step 5 - didive 2,872,,440 by 100 (centimeters to meters), and again by 1000 (meters to KiloMeters) = 28.724 KiloMeters per hour.

So, Approximately.. Yes, looks like you got your maths right, well done.


Thats not taking into account wind resistance, drive train gear losses, battery voltage drop, Thermal heating of wires increasing circuit resistance, tyre diameter growth due to rotational forces, inertial acceleration factors, the friction coefficients and drag of the tires, and several thousand other factors that may invalidate the accuracy of these calculations..

(ask a simple question that has been explained before, get a deliberately over-complicated answer.. Razz )

Well to be honnest i used a calculator i found on a web site Smile

But when it came up 28kph at a 10-1 gear ratio i thought hmm that sounds a little fast.

I was just flicking though a book of engineering calculations in a shop yesterday when this caught my eye. Aparently the book claimed the stored energy in a flywheel is calculated by:

KE = (v^2 * m) / (2g)

It also stats the answers comes out in Nm.

Now for a book the costs $250 this seems rather sad. For one thing energy is Joules, not Newton Meters. Second, no matter where you stick a Gravational Constant will give you that result. The units I figured out from the calculation are:
kg.m

Which isn't a reconized unit as far as I can see.


So I'm wondering am I wrong or is the book wrong?

the book is prolly wrong its probably writan by some one that has a half assed education. this is what i would do.

get the authors name stick that in google and see what comes up if nothing than its almost definatly the book if it comes up with a web page about him or any thing than search for more search able material and keep searching to see if there is any gaps in the story

lol reading over it it makes me sound like im one of those people scearch for conspericies lol

Nope. I trust the Authors. There were 10 of them for that chapter and 7 of them had PHD's in mechanical engineering.

But who cares about energy equations. Scarifiers 14 Joules pick did more damage to our VCR then The Aggressors 800 Joule Bike Wheels.

Theroy is one thing, Parctice is another.
